[WINCHESTERS KILLED IN AN EXPLOSION]

Dean feels his stomach twist and turn in on itself when Ruby practically storms her way into their motel room. Something's not right, maybe it's the look in her eyes or the way his gut screams at him, but something isn't right.

They put on the television and instantly the feeling makes sense. Everybody is gone and the man he found himself gaining a begrudging respect for has become yet another victim of this neverending war.

God, Nancy... she'd never even gotten laid. And they're dead - both him and Sam - but that's not what worries him. He's been legally dead before. That's not what he's worried about, it could actually do them some favours. It's the fact it was his plan that got them killed.

Maybe he should have agreed to Ruby's plan, let her cut poor innocent Nancy's heart out of her chest and kill all the demons in the vicinity. But... the thought had been horrific in itself, killing an innocent girl for all their lives? Somehow it didn't seem right, at the time. Now Dean isn't so sure.

Dad always taught him that it was the many over the few, but somehow and someway it hadn't seemed right to sacrifice innocence for their survival. It felt better to be fighting tooth and nail for it, just like always. Hell, even Henricksen had agreed and had gone willingly into the fire. This isn't his fault, it can't be. God gave man free will and had any of those people wanted Nancy's heart on a silver platter then surely they would have said something?

There's this divide growing, between him and Sam. Maybe it's because Sam knows he's going to die and he needs to be strong without Dean, but Dean doesn't like it. Doesn't like the way Sam was hesitant to speak up and protest at the idea of cutting out a young woman's heart to save their own skins. And then there's the fact that Sam never told him about Lilith. Something's not right and Dean intends on getting to the bottom of it, one way or another.

People die all the time, but it's different this time. Different because they were responsible for keeping those people alive and now they're all dead and Dean knows he'll feel their deaths on his conscience. Just one more thing for his shoulders to carry. Shit happens and the only thing you can do is keep going, Dean knows this better than anyone else. Since when the fuck had life given him the chance to catch his breath before smacking him in the face with the next big thing?

They're dead in the eyes of the law, and now is the time to capitalise on it. There's no other choice.
