RotM 1.69 Topic from 10/08/07 - "There was no sound, nothing at all, except for..."
There was no sound, nothing at all, except for the ragged breathing of one Dean Winchester. He wasn’t usually a man of emotion but he was unable to hold it back any longer, didn’t have any reason to any more - Sam was dead, stone cold and still.
It wasn’t supposed to be this way but deep down inside Dean had always known it would come down to this. He’d always said he’d be the one to bury his family and right now that self fulfilling prophecy hurts like a son of a bitch.
Ever since Dean had gotten old enough and wise enough to the ways of the world he’d never cried, not even when he broke his arm that one time when he was nine years of age, but right now it was like he’d forgotten that the floodgates are there for a reason.
It wasn’t fair and it wasn’t right, how many more people did he have to lose before the universe cut him some slack?
It was hard enough losing mom and it had nearly killed him when they’d lost dad but losing Sam was like losing a part of himself and Dean knew for certain he wouldn’t recover from this loss, wouldn’t be able to be Dean without Sam.
The room was too quiet and Dean wished he could look away and stop staring at his brother but he’d been that way for hours, he hadn’t even touched the food Bobby had brought in for him.
He’d made the mistake of taking his eyes off Sam when he’d been alive so he wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice, even if it didn’t matter because Sam’s dead. Those two little words have weighed heavy on his heart for a while now, ever since Sam had stopped breathing and the weak pulse had slowed under his fingers.
There was no sound, nothing at all, except for the ragged breathing of one Dean Winchester as he fell apart one jagged piece at a time.
