Born in the middle of a host of brothers, Jack was a young sixteen when he was shipped off to Vietnam. A sniper for the Army, he saw things there that hardened his mind and turned a young naïve soldier into a tough and cynical man. Going home, he tried to put that all in the past, settling down with his childhood sweetheart, determined to have a quiet life. It didn’t last long.
When a criminal mutant with the power to rot anything he touched invaded his home, Jack and his family was taken hostage. In the hours he spent with the mutant, named Blight, Jack came to empathize with him. Mutants had always been portrayed as being so superior, yet here was one whose powers had brought him nothing but misfortune. When the standoff eventually ended peacefully, due in no small part to Jack keeping the nervous mutant as calm as he could, he was left with a new resolve. Mutants and regular humans could work together. His ideals were only furthered when his son Reese turned out to be a low-level telekinetic, able to move the very smallest of objects.
He worked with various groups, traveling the world and putting both his diplomacy and skill with a gun to good use. It was a surprise to everyone, including his family, when he joined the MRE, which were known for their darker methods. While he did have good intentions, his motives were also mercenary in nature. He knew that his family, mostly made up of baseline humans, would be protected from any backlash by mutants as long as he stayed with the group. He served the group faithfully, acting as everyone’s father figure. He eventually decided to retire after one too many close calls. He went back to his quiet life, watching with contentment as his children married and he became a grandfather. But when the call came asking him to return, he knew he couldn’t refuse. So back Jack went, off to continue fighting the good fight.

Jack is a man’s man, brash and tough as nails. Fear doesn’t enter into his thinking. He’s a loner by nature, but is able to willingly cooperate with others when he knows it will get better results. He’s also incredibly stubborn, and often butts heads with those with strong leadership qualities and personalities. One will often catch glimpses of the warm hearted family man that is hidden beneath the gruff exterior, for as hard as he tries to hide it, there is a deep empathetic streak in him.
In regards to mutants, Jack is tolerant but not fearful of the superior race. He’s optimistic about trying to get homo sapiens and homo superior to get along cooperatively and sees his position on the team as proof that such a process can happen. On a deeper subconscious level, Jack knows that there’s a ticking clock for the survival of normal humans. He’s determined to at least make sure he lasts as long as possible.
