I meet Willow in the morning-half black lab, half unknown. We greet each other with play. Larry smiles indulgently and introduces himself. “You’ve got to meet Chris,” he says. “If you don’t go down right away, she’s liable to come up here.”
Down the driveway is Chris and Larry’s house. Chris ushers me in, looks me up and down.
“Would you like a shower? Here’s a clean towel. Let me open a new bar of soap for you. Do you need clean clothes? You can wash yours. Here, this skirt should fit. Which of these shirts do you like? Are you comfortable at Bob’s house? You’re welcome to stay here instead.”
I love Chris. I emerge from the shower in her long denim skirt and shirt. “Oh, Kara, you look beautiful! You’ve got to keep those clothes. Take them home with you!”
We talk. She insists I call Nanny and Stephen.
“Nanny, I’m in Sims, Arkansas.”
“Great, Kara, but HOW did you GET there?”
I promise to call Nanny once a week.
“Stephen, I’m out of the van. I’m staying with a woman in Sims.”
“Good, honey. I knew you’d find a way.”
“Let me give you her phone number.”
