What a week.

It has been hotter than Dutch Love here. Acutally, I've heard that applies everywhere, particularly for you northerners who aren't used to it. We are in shock as well, as the last two summers were quite mild. Needless to say, I've been downing Gatorade and water like it's going out of style.

Mom and I had a nice trip to DC and Baltimore last weekend. We took the train, which was an adventure, because the night before our trip a big storm knocked out the signals near Quantico, VA. We ended up in a train traffic jam, stopped several times for as much as thirty minutes at a time, and crept along at 15 MPH. Instead of reaching DC at noon, we got there at 5 PM. I was a prepared Girl Scout and took my laptop and some videos for entertainment along with my reading, so we didn't go stir crazy.

As usual, the trip was long enough for me to relax, but not long enough for me to do everything I wanted, although I did score some much-craved Ethiopian cuisine. The ride back was a challenge, as some children and their adult accompanists (parents, a grandparent, and an aunt) with no home training wreaked havoc for seven hours on the train. I tried reading, which I did finish my book, but napping just wasn't happening. I did catch a few ZZZZZs after they disembarked.

Work wasn't bad on Wednesday and Thursday, just hot. Very hot.

Saturday morning, I got a distressing phone call. We had a death in the line of duty, our first in thirty years or so. Woody was the most awesome person anyone could know.

Pardon the cut and paste URL, but I don't feel like going through the whole HTML thing right now... it takes too many brain cells. Supposedly the mood at work has been almost normal, but when I return tomorrow, there will be a whole new group of people dealing with it close-up. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.

On a happier note, I am reading again -- and Harry Potter has been keeping me sane despite craziness elsewhere in my world. Thank heavens for witches, wizards, and muggles.
