come into my light so i can see

I've had a lot of discussions (mostly with guys as they make up 90% of my friend base) over why they started dating a girl in the first place, and they almost unfailingly mention that they really liked all of the interests they had in common with a girl.  A lot of guys seemed to be obsessed with finding girls that share their love of video games or tech gadgets or history or art or stuff like that.  Ive really never understood the allure of this.  I mean to be sure, itd be nice if said girl had a few hobbies in common with you in order  to give you something to talk about at the start, but really, Id much rather date a girl that had very little in common with me.  I feel like I've learned something new or picked up some new skill or interest from every girl I've ever dated in a way that you cant quite do from a friend.  As much as I like video games, to be honest, I think all else being equal Id rather date a girl that didnt just so she could show me what other things she does with her time and so that I could introduce her to my world just a little.  What's the appeal of dating someone so similar to you that she may as well be your sister?
