Abilities: Having been taken in by the Chozo race after being orphaned, Samus was infused with their DNA and raised to become a warrior. Through rigorous physical and mental training, she has evolved into a woman who possesses incredible strength, agility, and endurance that far surpasses most humans-- with or without her suit. She always seems to have a blaster on her person somewhere in the event that she can't use her suit, capable of shooting both a projectile beam and a whip-like beam. That suit, however, is her primary source of power. The Power Suit is a cybernetic suit of armor crafted specifically for her by the Chozo. It allows her to breathe underwater and in outer space and also protects her from most airborne toxins. It is bonded to her biologically and while it's active, it can't be taken off unless Samus willingly does so. While she can freely take off the helmet, the rest of the suit is not meant to be dismantled and removed. Instead, it dematerializes from her body by mentally dismissing it and vice versa. Generally it takes on an orange and yellow appearance but is capable of acquiring upgrades (and in rarer cases, powerful outside factors that absorb into the suit) that will change its appearance and attributes. For example, she acquires a
Light Suit in Metroid Prime 2 that protects her completely from Dark Aether's darkness and allows her to travel through shafts of light. In Star Kingdom, however, the only suit upgrade she will retain is her Varia upgrade, which protects her from extreme heat and augments her defense from attacks. Her Power Suit also comes with a wide range of various equipment.
☆ Beam Cannon; Like the rest of the Power Suit, the arm canon is capable of receiving various beam weapon upgrades. At this time, she will only have the basic beam weapons: Power (+ Charge), Ice, and Wave/Spazer. Her Plasma Beam will have been damaged by the Darkness upon arrival and rendered useless. The Power Beam is the standard beam for any arm cannon and merely shoots out concentrated bursts of energy. Ice Beam is an extremely low temperature beam that is powerful but slow to shoot; it's possible for her to freeze enemies if she charges this beam before she fires it. Wave Beam is composed of wave energy and the beam itself fires off into three separate (but smaller) beams as opposed to one large one; it also possesses a sort of homing attribute if Samus locks onto an enemy and can travel through most walls. It's stronger than the Power Beam but weaker than the Ice Beam. If Samus charges up any of these beams, they fire off into one big ball of energy when released and do more damage than firing uncharged shots. Consequently, this takes more time to do.
☆ Missiles; As sort of an extension of the Beam Cannon, missiles can also be fired from her arm cannon. Most of these are ordinary missiles that do fairly significant damage. However, she also has access to a limited supply of Super Missiles, which pack twice the punch as ordinary missiles. They both have homing devices that will track the enemy if Samus is locked onto them, but they will explode themselves if they go long enough without hitting their target. In the past, she's had access to Ice Missiles and Seeker Missiles, but no longer does.
☆ Morph Ball; Perhaps the equipment that is the biggest indicator of how intelligent Chozo technology is would be the Morph Ball. Samus and her suit morph into an armored ball that's about a third (maybe less) of Samus' size. In this form, she is able to maneuver through small places and also has access to a few different abilities. One of these abilities is Morph Ball Bombs, which are small balls of energy that explode after a second. They're weak and do very little damage unless you're a monster and she's blowing up your innards; they're designed primarily to remove small obstacles like debris while maneuvering through tunnels and the like. Much higher on the list, however, are Power Bombs. They have an extremely wide reach and are arguably one of the most powerful assets to Samus' arsenal. They take out anything in the immediate area that's structurally weak or unsound and can kill almost any of the regular enemies in one hit. Because this is so powerful, however, this weapon will also have been damaged by the Darkness and rendered useless. She also possesses an ability called Boost Ball, where she can charge up her energy and quickly propel herself forward. Finally, the last ability in her Morph Ball mode is called Spider Ball, where she can attach herself to magnetic tracks and roll up walls and ceilings.
☆ Visors; As with the previous two sections, visors are also something that commonly get upgrades, but only in the Metroid Prime series. Samus will only be arriving with her standard combat visor and the Scan Visor, which simply allows her to learn more about creatures, enemies (and often times their weaknesses), structures, plantlife, people... just about anything that's worth learning anything about. The Scan Visor will only be used on other players with permission, of course, and how much information she is able to gather from the worlds around her will be limited to common knowledge. Important information will be retained her visor's logbook.
☆ Space Jump; This basically allows Samus to jump to ridiculous heights. Often times, this involves somersaulting higher and higher into the air as much as she wants. However, this upgrade also lends itself to giving her boots small boosters in the heels where after jumping once, she can jump again in mid-air via the boosts.
☆ Grapple Beam; A compact device attached to Samus' left hand, it's a beam that does just as its name implies: it grabs things. More often than not, this device is used to attach to objects so that Samus can swing herself onto another platform or reel herself in. However, it's also been shown to rip shields and armor away from enemies. The beam itself is pretty finicky as to what it latches onto and will not do damage if it comes into contact with someone.
☆ Screw Attack; While somersaulting through the air, Samus' suit emits intense energy that spirals with her while she somersaults. It can often destroy regular enemies in one hit and destroy certain obstacles, but this attack will be powered down as well. Instead of ripping through everything in its path, the Screw Attack will now act more like a pinball. It'll still do damage, just not as much, and she'll be more likely to bounce off things she Screw Attacks into.
☆ Speed Boost; An upgrade that allows Samus to break into super-speed while she's running. This in itself isn't very powerful, as she'll just put a dent in the wall at the very most if she runs into it. She also has to get a good running start before the Speed Boost will kick in, which requires a long and uninterrupted straight path. There's also a sub-ability to this upgrade called Shinespark. After the Speed Boost kicks in, Samus can store the energy in her suit and stop, then launch herself in any one direction (including straight up in the air) at that same speed. It damages her to do so, however, and so must be used sparingly.
Background:
But among the stars, there is one light that burns brighter than all others. The light of Samus Aran. Appearance: [
Power Suit] [
Face]
She is also approximately 6'3" tall.
Personality: The strong but silent type, Samus is generally a woman of few words. Granted, when you spend the vast majority of your time flying solo and traveling to alien worlds, there isn't a lot of time for chit-chat. Even in the presence of Galactic Federation soldiers and commanding officers, she generally doesn't speak much. She takes her orders and follows through with them quickly and thoroughly. On a mission, she takes to professionalism greatly. She's there to do a job. Period. When she does speak, Samus can be pretty long-winded in some cases and is incredibly introspective. She keeps a journal and has often been seen recapping and mulling over events in various installments. One should not mistake her quiet demeanor for shyness. She's forward, to the point. and bears no qualms with approaching another person. No question, she'll say what's on her mind if she feels reason to.
Logic tends to rule most of her decision-making. She's cool, collected, and emotionally trained not to show any fear or weakness, nor does she lay down her trust and loyalties easily. In order to wield her Power Suit in all its complicated and intelligent design, it's required of her to have absolute self-control, and because of this immense self-control, she is able to wear it for extremely long periods of time without consequence. It's very rare for things to genuinely get under her skin-- to be enough to make her fill with rage and act purely on emotion instead. This is a feat only Ridley and Mother Brain have been able to accomplish and it ended promptly with them lying in a heap of their own smoking remains. That said, she's certainly not perfect. Genetically enhanced or not, she's still human. She makes mistakes and feels just like everybody else. The only difference is that she's better at hiding it than most people are. She's gotten angry with the Galactic Federation many times for poor decision making and would outspokenly tell them so. This is evidenced largely in Metroid Fusion, namely where she is outraged by the Federation's decision to try and capture the dangerous X parasites in spite of knowing just how lethal they were and how it could threaten life in its entirety. In fact, she even spared a baby metroid (the creatures she was sent to destroy) on a mission because it reminded her of the attack on her homeworld when she was just a child and how frightened and alone she felt.
She cares very much for the well-being of others. Even if she doesn't outright say it, it clearly shows through her actions. She puts her life in danger many times to save people and creatures alike and shows compassion and remorse for those she feels she wasn't able to save. Most notable is her guilt over being unable to protect the baby metroid, who had imprinted Samus as its mother and later saved her from being annihilated by Mother Brain, only to be killed by the space pirate leader itself. She takes it upon herself to protect others and stands as a pillar of strength for almost everyone she meets. Often times, she even stands as a beacon of hope.
Despite being reknowned across galaxies as a hero, Samus is very humble and modest about herself and her accomplishments. She never brags or goes into much detail if she is prompted, seeing herself as no better than anyone else. While confident in her abilities, she's a far cry from being arrogant.
Her independence and stubborn nature are another couple of key traits of hers. Having left the Galactic Federation to pursue a career as a bounty hunter, she relies on no one but herself. She doesn't particularly care for authority figures and dislikes taking orders, but she understands the the need for a chain of command. If she disagrees with an order being given, however, she won't hesitate to defy them, as she did in with the X parasite incident. Her own values, principles, and the well-being of others always come before an order with her, no matter how much trouble it could potentially get her into.
Admittedly, her independence does lead her to be lonely and brooding at times, but she forever remains steadfast in her ambitions and chosen path.
Samples
Action/Journal Sample: [Appearing on the feed is a young woman in bulky armor. She has her helmet tucked under one arm while she holds the communicator with the hand not occupied by an arm cannon. It looks like she's standing outside in Traverse Town.]
I understand the vast majority of the people here are refugees. Is there some sort of alliance being formed to combat this new threat? I'd like to help.
[She pauses, looking skyward for a moment before expelling a breath and looking back at the feed.]
And if you happen to find any foreign technology out there, I'd appreciate if you got into touch with me immediately. I seem to be missing some of my equipment. ...My name is Samus Aran.
[And with that, she turns off the feed.]
RP Sample: Without a doubt, Samus knew she had been out of reach of Planet Zebes' explosion and no space pirate ships showed up on her gunship's radar. So when the entire ship shook and rattled violently as if it had been caught in an explosion, Samus knew something was up. She wasn't progressing forward at all, like a giant hand was holding the ship between its fingers and pulling it back, no matter how hard she pushed the thrusters. Then the alarm in the cockpit went off: red light pulsing through the ship to accompany the shrill repetitive noise that warned her the ship was malfunctioning. Something flashed across the diagnostics screen.
Unidentified biomass has breached the ship's defenses. System failure. Engine failure.
And just like that, everything inside the ship died with a sad whir. Alarmed that something could demolish her ship's workings so quickly, Samus had been prepared to bust her way out of the ship when she saw black tendrils worming its way around outside.
"Ing...!? No-- it can't be."
That was the last thought Samus had on the matter, however. The glass between it and her shattered and suddenly there was Darkness swarming in from every side. She shot wildly with her beam cannon, trying to aim for what she assumed were vital areas, but it seemed impervious to her efforts. When that didn't work, she attempted to melee the Darkness away from her, only for her arm to go right through it. She was just a sitting duck inside this cockpit and she hated it. It didn't stop her from trying to fight it, but she was eventually dragged into unconsciousness despite her efforts.
When she awoke, it was with a start and - thankfully - in her armor. The nearest moogle got her arm cannon pointed in its face, who jumped back in fright and nearly dropped the items he was going to give her. "I-I mean you no harm, sir! K-Kupo!" the moogle tried.
Samus gave pause and brought her left hand up to her visor, switching it to scan mode. She promptly scanned the moogle.
Species: Moogle
A peaceful and sentient creature that has taken up residence in many different worlds. They're quite intelligent, excelling especially in synthesizing weapons, and end almost every sentence with the word 'kupo'. Seem to take a particular liking to kupo nuts.
She turned the visor back to combat mode and relaxed a little. "I see. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to alarm you," she said finally, and crouched down to one knee to meet the creature at eye level, more or less.
"O-Oh! You're a ma'am, kupo! Very sorry. Um-- it's alright, kupo! We are used to those kind of reactions here. Kupo..."
"This happens often?"
The moogle nodded and went on to explain everything to her. Not a lot caught Samus off guard anymore, and half of her wasn't even surprised to find herself in another world entirely. She visited many planets in her lifetime, a few of which broke the barriers of reality. This didn't seem much different. Only difference was, she couldn't leave whenever she wanted. Not right now, anyway. No gunship.
Beggars couldn't be choosers, though; at least she had her Power Suit.
Notes: I admit, I ignored any Other M characterization or canon that wasn't already known, because I feel it greatly contradicts with the rest of what is established. If this is a problem, let me know~!
