Broken verse - Diner trouble

He divides his attention between being enough on the road to not crash, and show sam after eating the handful of candy he's got. "Music?" He takes Sam's hand gently, guiding him the way you might when teaching a child something. He uses Sam's hand to hit the on button, a soft rock radio station coming on in the background. Hand over the volume control. "Louder." and showing him. "Quieter." and showing him the other way. "you see?"

A look of utter wonder as the music clicks on. His smile gets bigger, a distant memory sparking to life. Sam slowly fiddles with the controls. "R..ra..radio. Baby." There's a memory achingly out of reach. He twists the volume once or twice until the music is right.
"Home." The word comes easily. "Dean. Baby. Home."

If he was anyone but who he was, he'd probably be crying with hopefully happy relief. but he's not even if he is pretty damned close. "Yeah, she is. Bobby's place too, now. But you're right. She's home."

He still knows his brother, and Sam can hear the emotion in his voice. "Dean. Baby.. home. Radio." The words are starring to come now, at least a little easier. "Home."

He nods, and uses a cough to cover him clearing his throat from the raw and slightly unexpected emotion. "Yeah. You're doing well. Really well." Proud. Happy.

It had been a rough night of nightmares and after an hour, Sam was starting to drift. His head tilts to rest on his brother, his breathing starting to slow and even out. "Dean.. home." Safe and happy.

He doesn't move his brother off of him, using the arm being rested on as little as possible so as not to displace him. "Just sleep, sammy. You'll be safe here."

His breathing slows and evens, curling against his brother. It had been a long night, and he tired easily. Sam sleeps soundly for an hour, rubbing his eyes blearily. "Dean?"

He's contemplating going back now, because it's that or fill up. "Hey, sammy. Ready to go back yet?"

Sam concentrates, nodding. "Home." A few minutes pass and he tugs at his brother's arm, voice unsure. "Dean?"

The tug has him looking mostly at Sam. "What's up?"

It's a hard word to grasp and he visibly struggles with it. It's a word he's heard before. Usually Dean pleading with him. "Dean.. Dean.. eat?" He's not sure if that's the right word.

"You want to eat?" But it's less asking him and more confirming to himself that's what Sam's asking. He waits for the answer with his heart pounding- another step forwards would be awesome.

That's it. Sam smiles, relieved. "Eat." Normally he'd eat what was placed in front of him, or on bad days, Dean would have to feed him. But in the car, something clicked. He was hungry

"A grin. "Well, we've been out a while." He chews at the corner of his lip as he thinks aloud "...Shall we stop somewhere... or just eat when we get in...?"

That's a little too much for him to decide. He gives Dean a somewhat helpless look. "Eat?"

He gives San a headshake that's one part exasperated and two parts fond. "I know, Sam. Was just thinking out loud. Sometimes it helps." A place is signposted just as he explains. He points at the sign. "Eat. That settles it."

Sam nods, returning his attention to the radio, fingers barely touching the buttons. He doesn't want to disturb the music. Eating. He liked that idea. He could do that. The diner was crowded, and the locals couldn't fail to take notice of the tall giant shuffling in behind Dean, one hand wrapped firmly around the amulet, the other hanging on to his brother's jacket like a lifeline.
