Happy 3000th mi Marin Fairfax! That's 4828 km for those living in metric land.

It made it. I almost find it hard to believe that it did, but it did. At 5:43pm on the 10th of March, 2009 it passed 3000 mi. To celebrate, I'm giving it the gift of new cables and housings :). Actually, it was due for an overhaul after 3000 mi so it needs it anyway. 3000 mi was another milestone for another reason: it is now the cheapest method of transport I own per mile, knocking the motorcycle off the #1 position (motorcycle also needs a new chain and sprockets, which would have put it over too).

Last night I picked up my bicycle stand from REI. Against Joe's very sound advice to just walk, I rode all the way to REI and just carried it under my arm all the way home. The stand weighs about 20 lbs / 9 kg, according to the packaging, and was too bulky to zip tie down. I'm pretty sure I could have strapped it to my bag and rested one end on the bicycle rack though... I assembled it and the thing is freakin' huge. It can hold the bottom bracket of a bike - the bottom most part of the frame - almost at eye level for me. The base sticks out enough that I can't use it on my veranda, because the support legs are too long. In the fully set up position, it barely fits through most door frames. Luckily those clever people at Park Tools recognise that not everyone wants to have it standing up all the time, so they have made it collapsible, and in it's collapsed form it's quite easy to move around. I dare say I could even strap it to a backpack if I had to :).

I'm feeling infinitely better than on the previous couple of days. My knees and joints no longer hurt when walking or riding, and I have a tiny bit of muscle fatigue which should be gone by tonight's ride. By the way, I found this post both hilarious and quite accurate. The post says that brake pads last a month in the wet. That's pretty optimistic. They last a lot less than that. A week is closer to the truth.
