My job as a SDET: Things you can find in the average office

Apr 17, 2009 18:42

There are a variety of things that people seem to stock in their offices, but overall usually it's pretty mainstream if you have:
  • Food (cereal)
  • Something from home, or something quirky. I have vegemite, my office share OC has a big Pikachu light.
  • Photos from home. SB had photos of his wife, MV my old manager had photos of his kid, etc. I had the last photo my sister sent of her and Mike up until we moved a short while ago.
  • Whiteboard, and whiteboard markers. Not necessarily to do things for work.
  • Computers.
  • Plants.
  • Couches.
  • Books.

Then you get into the more quirky and cool things.
  • Posters - Halo posters, Initech posters. The Initech posters are really funny to see around the office. I saw several swingline staplers too; no red ones though.
  • A fish tank. I don't mean one somewhere in the building, I mean some guy, in his office, has fish that are his. And not some tiny little goldfish bowl either; a full, 5 foot fish tank with under gravel water filter. In his office.
  • Hidamari no tami
  • Giant LCD TV. By giant, at least 40". Mounted on the roof IIRC. He also has a couch, meaning he could just lie there and watch TV if he really wanted to.
  • Super plush Ergonomic chair (like a La-Z boy, but better), with adjustable height desk (admittedly the guys with the adjustable height desks have to apply for them from OH&S, and usually have back problems)
  • Nerf guns and inflatable bats. The entire operations team supposedly has these, although they only really bring them out on special occasions. Apparently they got in trouble using them one time when someone alerted the Fun police
  • Really, really, REALLY old games. Like the original Civilization. And the how to guide. The original Red Alert series.
  • An arcade machine.

So it's always cool visiting people's offices.

If you want something in particular to be covered in the next, "My job as a SDET" please leave a comment and I'll cover it in future weeks.
