Ufta! I got stuff done today! I finally, finally got started on my Yuletide story! Not only got it started but almost done. Maybe all the way done. I'm not sure if I want to end it where it is at or elaborate. I'm definitely past the word limit, so that's no worry... I think I'll need to reread tomorrow or in a few days to see. This is why I'm so happy to have it well underway! Now, I can sit and stew about it with my editor hat on. I'd been so worried about it. My recipient gave me a character they liked in the prompt but no letter or anything else, so figuring out what I wanted to say... Plus, I needed to figure out my own internal logic to the world of the fandom, how things worked and whatnot. So I'd been reaquainting myself with the canon and thinking and thinking but not writing. Still, I figure if I'm happy with it and its something I'd want to read, well, probably (hopefully!) my recipient will want to read and like it too! EEEE! PROGRESS!

I might also have poked at some other gift!fics. A writing mood, I guess, making up for this past week when all I did was read stuff.

Speaking of which... has anyone else read anything by Sharon Shinn? I recently tore through her new book of short stories (called Quartrain), Castle Auburn, Archangel, Rider and the Mystic, and Heart of Gold. Anyone want to gush or talk or meta about them with me?! I'm going to the library for more, at least of the Archangel series, but they must be gotten through inter-library loan, so it will be a few days. Sigh. They are not really deep books or introspective much, not even the one sci-fi one, but they are wonderful world-building and adventure stories. I quite enjoyed them. I couldn't quite get into Rider and the Mystic for some reason and I actually liked the short story set in the same universe as Heart of Gold more than the book itself. I'm pretty sure this is because I felt that universe was not as well thought out as some of the others, or rather might have been trying to do too much. The short story was more contained in terms of characters and in what she was showing off about the world. So what you got was richer, quality over quantity. Heart of Gold was still pretty enjoyable though.

I also recently read the latest of the St. Cyr Mysteries, the book What Remains of Heaven. I'm a titch disappointed. I was really looking forward to it and the mystery was alright, but the cliffhanger from the last book about the characters lives was... really just drug out and not resolved in any way. I felt like I'd waited to read the same damn thing. Hero Jarvis is a character of much awesomeness! She needs and deserves more! More page time! Oh, well. There's always the NEXT book. I might wait and just borrow it from a library though, instead of buying.....

writer ramble, yuletide!
