Because we've had plumbing work done we've had to have a tempering valve installed on our hot water system to comply with the building code. Since that went in on Friday the hot water pressure has fluctuated so wildly that it's impossible to shower. The building company has a few solutions but the only one they reckon is likely to be successful is "get a new hot water system". I want new hot water. It's in the long term plan but I want time to look at my options - do we go for electric or gas? A new cylinder or an instant doohicky? What about those new fangled heat-pump jobbies? I don't want to have to make a snap decision on this. I do, however, really want a working shower. We're going to ring the council in the morning and find out exactly what the code says and whether we are able to get any kind of exemption or period of grace so we can think things over.

We had a dude in from the Clean Heat project in today to talk about our heating and insulation options as our house is not exactly toastie and our logburner won't be able to be used after 2014. The offending fire was put in using a subsidy which means we are not eligible for another one unless we put in a heat-pump even though a heat-pump isn't actually a very good option for our house. We're going to get quotes on ceiling and underfloor insulation soon and then will see how the house feels before getting a new logburner sometime in the next five years- probably during summer.

All-in-all I'm not loving being a home-owner today.
