Heartbroken, but not defeated

Nov 04, 2004 02:39

In light of recent election results, I am heartbroken by the now undeniable truth: there were not enough votes, and John Kerry simply did not win this election. In the minds of so many, they gave all they could give, and did all that they could do, to see to it that George Bush did not remain in office for 4 more years, but in the end, we all came up short; and in the minds of many, the hope we had before going into the election has diminished, they taste the bitterness of defeat, and feel like they have failed miserably. And I'm sure there are also a lot of people out there who feel that things have gotten worse in light of the election results, rather than improve like we were all hopnig for. There a lot of people out there who have lost faith in our own power to change, and that the only changes made were indeed for the worse, rather than for the better. And me, I see an opportunity for George Bush to push his agenda on the American people, and will likely succeed; and I am not so sure that the damage caused can be fixed, at least not anytime soon. If terrorists ever needed a reason to hate the American people rather than just the government and the Bush administration, they have one now. However, one fiber of hope still remains. It took 4 long years for the movement against Bush to grow this big, and build up this much momentum and strength. Think of what 8 years will bring us. Maybe in that time, the American people will see their mistake, and more importantly, see why it was a mistake. For now, we must go back to the table, we must regroup, and we must move forward. Just we did back in November of 2000, we will go to bed in the nights ahead, and when all is said and done, we will all still wake up as Americans. John Kerry has said that there is a strong need for unity, and a need to find common ground amongst ourselves. However, that will never happen as long the republicans are in control, and the democrats are the ones who, in the eyes of many, need to get on board with the republicans; rather than the other way around. It has been undoubtedly proven that this president is not capable of uniting a nation he himself helped divide; and it is because of his administration's courses of action that have us all so divided over so many things. Howard Dean said, back when he had just ended his own presidential campaign, that we would at least have a chance to make things better with John Kerry as president. Needless to say, that chance must be put on hold until 2008.

So what now? Good question. We will see where we were will go from here, come January. For now, the bitter taste of defeat is the top story. We fought long and hard for what we believed in, for what we wanted, for the change we ever so desperately needed but were ultimately denied. At the end of the day, though, we are all still Americans. However, in spite of it, it will take a long, long time for a lot of us to gain hope for our country again; especially when it comes time again to seek change.

In a way, this defeat tastes the same way it did for the south when we lost the civil war. However, unlike the confederacy, we will live on to fight another day. And until that day comes again, we can only brace ourselves for what's to come. And maybe, when it finally gets here, whatever it may be, the American people will see the error of their ways. But for now, all we can do is wait. Take care my friends. This is very dark day for us all, I know. We are not defeated. We must have what may have ultimately led to Bush's re-election, and that is unrelenting resolve. There will come a day when our day will once again be on the horizon, and when that day comes, we will fight again. In the words of an old Creed song I liked in middle school, Are you ready, Are you ready, for what's to come?

Rest now my friends. The time has come to move forward. Peace be with you, and may the lord have mercy on the United States of America. Goodnight.

Signing off,
Drew
