Greetings from Thailand!
I'm in Bangkok at the moment. I arrived in the city about 1 week
ago and was immediately wisked away by Eric and Todd to Eric's place
for a quick shower. Then a taxi to the bus, then a 3.5 hour bus
ride to Ban Phe, then 20 Baht ride on the back of a motor scooter
to Tooey's for the best Pad Thai in Thailand. One night in the last
hotel available. Say hi to the friendly spotted Thai cockroach.
The next morning after buying a backpack, sandals and "Ray-Ban" sunglasses
for a total of about $8 U.S., we took the tug style boat to the island
of Ko Samet. Wow. Beautiful. Warm ocean swims, fresh coconut juice,
warm air, pristine beaches, thai food, fire-spinning dancers, beach
parties, some bug bites, lots of stories from other travelers, major
humidity, and friendly Thai people. I laughed out loud when I walked
past one of the areas where the locals live, and saw a little shack
with the word "sauna" painted on the door.
One of the days on Ko Samet we rented off-road motor bikes and followed
some challenging trails to a very secluded beach resort. This is
the beach they use to make postcards for travel brochures, and photoshoots
for swimsuit models. We rinsed off the blood and mud from the trail
riding and sipped our Caffe Yen, Thai style iced coffee.
I'm back in Bangkok today. Tonight I take a tour of the canals.
Old Bangkok was buit around a canal system, similar to Venice.
This weekend is the New Year holiday and the Water Festival. It's
the biggest holiday/ celebration in Thailand. It's supposed to be
absolutely mad. People every where, throwing water on eachother.
Eric and I were doused today by some of the girls at the food counter
where Eric is a regular.
Tuesday we fly to Nepal for a week of Yaks and Sherpas in the land
that is home to a good portion of the tallest bit of land in the
world. We may not make it to base camp, but we will explore some
of the trails.
gotta go, more to come......
