It's All Gone!

Ten years ago, in October, I wrote about a birthday holiday my family took. Back then, there for six of us. Back then, my about to be 11 year old, was only one and loved listening to the Mickey Mouse March. I found the entry in here, last week. I realized it has been 10 years since my family went on a real holiday, like that. The cottage. The mint in the back yard. Animal cookies and hot cocoa on the back porch. Blue Jays flying around. Cardinals chirping at night and sounding like crickets, but not.  The best pizza place ever. The steak house with the talking cookie jars. The interesting store with the silly name of Brand New Dead Things.

This was Yarnell, Arizona, ten years ago. Now, it's all gone.  It's the moment when we realize how desensitized we are. When I heard about Oklahoma, it was sad. When I heard about Colorado, it was sad. When I heard about Calgary, it was sad. When I heard about Yarnell, I cried myself to sleep. It's personal. These are my memories and my home. I had thought of going back there, again. But, I waited too long. It's all gone!

My younger boys, who don't remember it, are hopeful when they see the pictures. "There are a few buildings still there. They can rebuild." After all, if Ashfork burned down twice and is still there.....
