There are way too many fics that I’d like to rec, trying to pick just one kind of made my head hurt. So eventually I just decided to stop thinking and go with the first fic that comes to my mind in each category.
The categories are the following:
1. an old fic (posted at least three years ago)
2. a new fic (posted within the last six months)
3. a fic you wish had gotten more attention (less than 50 kudos on AO3 or less than 30 comments on LJ)
4. a genfic
5. a fic focused on a female character
6. a fic which made you see a character in a new light
7. a fic which made you ship something
8. a fic which inspired you to write
9. a fic with a particularly memorable line
10. a fic that I go back to repeatedly [this one was left up to our own choice]
1.
Dish It Out by happycabbage75 - set in season 4, dealing with the fallout of what Sam and Dean said to each other in Sex and Violence, addressing Dean’s PTSD… Plus a very cool case.
2.
The Cave by
gaelicspirit, who always gets Sam and Dean 100 % right and always manages to find the perfect balance of hurt, angst, brother!feels, comfort and competent!Winchesters.
3.
Holy, Holy, Holy by tco might scare some readers away with its long paragraphs, but I love the author’s style and the alternative take on what could happen after Castiel rescued Dean from Hell. (Also, I really like this author's version of Claire Novak and her interactions with Sam.)
4.
Putting the Fün Back in Dysfünctional by
greenthumb421 - it’s funny and angsty and full of brother!feels, and Sam and Dean are solving a really cool case, there are awesome original characters… It’s such a shame that it’s the only fic this author’s written in the fandom.
5.
Acting as Mom by ameliacareful - this raised the bar for season 12 very high.
6.
Roses in December by ratherastory. I’ve never really given much thought to Jessica before, only taking her as the person who’s death was the catalyst to the Sam and Dean’s story. In this fic, she’s a very prominent character, and I love that while she’s absolutely awesome, she’s definitely not a saint either. Simply put, I started appreciating Jess as a person much more after reading this fic.
7.
Laughing as a Young Man Laughs by
lysanatt - Dean/Death wasn’t a pairing I’d considered before, and certainly not one I’d expect to find a long fic about. But it really works.
8. I can’t really come up with anything specific, but I think reading (and loving) leonidaslion’s fics helped me face, accept and embrace the fact that I love hurt!Dean, and it gave me courage to start writing.
9.
Panta Rhei by notasmuch - it’s not a line, but a short piece of dialogue:
"Coffee." He demanded.
"Coffee?" The other voice sounded hopeful.
"No. Coffee." This time he made it an order.
"Mmm... coffee." The voice was falling asleep.
No luck then. He went back to trying the sleeping-more thing again.
10.
The 1300 Days by stele3 is my go-to fic when I need Dean, Dean and more Dean.
