One and the other

In few months I will move out of my apartment on Wabash St. and into the house Paul is fixing on Bagley, where I will live with Matt and have roommates. This is very exciting to me.

I will not miss the musty carpet in my apartment, the drug activity on my street, the constant over-sensitive car alarms set off by the slightest loud noise, and paying $2.25 to wash and $1.25 to dry (quarters only). Nor will I miss my bathroom with its drippy faucet, urine-cloud-generating toilet, low mirror, and lack of horizontal space, fan, and safety plug. Most of all, I will not miss any of my neighbors who keep several dogs outside, even in the rain, barking for hours and making walking down my street an dog-assault typhoon. Fucking god damn incessant barking from at least nine dogs surrounding my bedroom window! Fuck!

Seriously. You should move in to my building.

I will miss living on the same street as Paul, Anny, Ang, Nikki, Dale and Mike. I will miss living one block from Slow's, Michigan Central, and around the corner from La Colmena. I'll miss my shotgun-toting Vietnam vet building super Roy and his safety-increasing nosiness, late-night patrols, and his care of the blocks around the building. Oh yeah, and the way that he shovels the snow from the street when the city doesn't, and cleans it from people's cars at the same time. He gets behind in some of the building maintenance, but he does a lot of good, too. I'll miss the way he cranks the heat in the Winter, I'll miss being near monkey bar parks, having free and 80% operable internet, having a newly paved and well-lit alley, having a cool view and lots of sun through my windows, and I'll miss living on a street that doubles as a sound effect. Wa-BASH!!

I will trade the ability to have complete solitude for a social house full of people. I will trade the set of annoying noises here for a new set of annoying noises at Bagley, I will trade excellent proximity to a grocer for excellent proximity to the central business district, and I will trade street parking for street parking.

I look forward to having a social space with a commune of roommates where people visit and food is shared. I also am likely to go in on a work/studio space with my friend Jerry, which will be another exciting first.

I can't wait to live with Matt, whom I love. In a few weeks, we're together a year.
