Can I ask format these pictures were posted in?

I tried to download them and they all came out with the extension .dat.

Windows 8 would not let me download them as jpgs. I just started using 8, but its allowing to download other images in jpg and other formats, So I wonder if these really are .dat files, or if Window 8 is acting up in some way? i change them to .jgp by hand and that seemed to work.
