I'm back from doing field work down in Cape Cod. It was really fun and I'm glad I decided to go. However, I never want to go to Woods Hole ever again. Too many run-ins with the police. We were basically staying at a campground in just north of Falmouth for about 5 days, but every now and again we needed to head down to Woods Hole to visit my colleague's (Jolene) travel partner (Miriam). Anyways, we parked at a Coffee shop and put about $2.00 in the machine for 2hrs of staying time. Well, we came back an hr and 45min later and we had two parking tickets on the car. The machine expired 20min early and we weren't parked close enough to the curb. We were pissed. That was $25 the grant wouldn't pay Jolene back for.
The next day, Jolene and I went to a pond in Yarmouth, which we needed to drive over a "private rail road crossing" to get to. So, we both managed to get to the pond which was through a bunch of brambles and we arrived at the water. She got in and started walking around the pond, looking for the plant we were collecting. eventually she hollered that there was a trail leading down to the pond. So, I walked back through the brambles to the car and followed the road back to where I came in. I found a nice little housing community and eventually found a house that looked as though a trail was in the backyard. Being resposible, I knocked on the door and informed the owner of our work and asked her about the trail. She told me to talk to another neighbor of hers, who just happened to be standing outside. I went over the the neighbor, an older woman, and informed her of what Jolene and I were doing. As it turns out, she called the cops on us for trespassing. The next thing I knew, I was trying to convince three cops of what Jolene and I were doing there and that we had a permit and everything, meanwhile the thoughts of Jolene belly deep in pond water, walking around the pond oblivious to anything that was happening right now kept creeping into my head. Eventually, eveyone left and I didn't HAVE to go down to the station unless we were going to work in the area for more than a week. I got, Jolene and we got the fuck out of there. Crazy people.
So, two days later we were staying overnight at Woods Hole to save money (camping = $42 a night). We parked in an area that had metered parking between 8am-6pm. The next morning (my last day to be able to help Jolene) we were in a rush. We had a LOT of work to do and not much time to do it. We headed out to the car with all our stuff and guess what we found. Nothing! The car had been towed. Apparently, contrary to the lack of No overnight parking signs, there was no parking on the street between the hours of 2am and 6am. We were pissed. I called the police and they told me what towing company towed the car. I called the towing company and found out that they were in Falmouth (30min away). I called the taxi, and we were on our way. a few hrs and $200 later ($20 cab, $158 towing, $25 ticket) we were in the car on the way to Mary Dunn pond, and hour away. We got to Mary Dunn, and I made a vow to never return to Woods Hole again. Eventually, we finished the work, with enough twilight to get back to the car (8:15pm). We carcked open some beers and chilled for a half an hour by the car. Then we headed to my house.
Jolene stayed over and left the next day. Of course, yesterday I received an email from her and I've posted it below:
You're not going to believe this, but a cop stopped by Mary Dunn Pond today when i was leaving. Just wanted to see if i needed help or anything since nobody ever parks on that road......yeah right. I think the cape cod police have it in for canadians who drive duct-taped repaired station wagons.
