i have a new duty at work now. they took me off the desk for most of the afternoon; instead i sit in our new computer lab and teach people how to print papers and check their email. today it's really slow and so it's fun. i've already read fifty pages and paid a bunch of bills online.

i'm reading harold bloom's genius book now. it's "a mosaic of one hundred exemplary creative minds," according to the spine. bloom's interesting because in the 60s and 70s he was considered a radical and now he's very conservative (with literature, that is), and he's spending all his energy trying to bolster the Canon against the barbs of "cultural studies" and whatnot.

the book's biggest influence on me, though, has been to give me a jones, as they say, for some of the classics. there are still some shakespeare plays i am embarrassed to say i've never read, and i've never read a word of dante. i want to read don quijote all the way through too. my next goal is to overcome my hatred of dickens, which i think stems from nothing more than my anger over being forced to read great expectations in ninth grade. i'm going to read bleak house and/or the pickwick papers and/or tale of two cities after my ongoing vonnegut (galapagos and deadeye dick) and bloom binge.

so, computer lab: once school is back in session this will suck greatly, but for the next few weeks it's nice. i might even be able to smuggle in a coffee mug!
