His name was Cupid, and we were lovestruck,
Floppy ears and an eagerness to please,
Playing fetch in the backyard with our pup,
Gales of elation blew through the trees.
Chain link that we put up together,
Penned him in so he could not roam.
"He's just a dog, wouldn't know any better.
It's a big ol' lonely world, but he's safe at home."
He's dug again and he's free as a seagull,
His wanderlust has taken its toll.
We've grown older, we're two different people
and tired now of filling the hole.
Chain link we keep mending together
to pen him in so he will not roam.
He's just a dog, doesn't know any better.
It's a big and daring world, keep him safe at home.
He's run away, and he's taken you with him.
This game of fetch has come to an end.
The air is still, like a dog that lies sleeping
in another yard, with a new best friend.
Chain link that we put up together,
I lean against it, standing alone.
I look to see you, even though I know better.
This fence that sits between us has turned into stone.
