Workin' For the Man ~ A One Act

The cast:

Employee/Me ~ Amicable fresh youth, tryin to make her way in the world as she works in a coffee shop to support herself in college, despite the mediocre pay.

Manager ~ Friendly more often to the point of flirting. Tries to be managerial but mostly ends up kissing Owner ass. When they say jump, generally does. Must believe himself to be a smooth talker.

Owner ~ (Non-player) Jackass. Formerly a labratory worker, possibly kicked out because no one could STAND HIM. Nothing is ever good enough. No one is to be trusted. He needs no reason for the shit that gets in his brain, no matter how farfetched it is. He is right and you will be damned to argue with him.

~~~~~~
Enter *small coffee shop*, at beginning of "shift" as plucky little [EMPLOYEE] enters tossing apron over neck and tying behind back while managing a wave to [MANAGER].
Employee: "Hey!"
Manager: "Hey- I need to talk to you in the backroom for just a sec, all right?"
Employee: "...Am I in trouble? -Again?"
Manager: "No [thumbs up] you're totally fine. Just need to bring up a few things..."
The Two Enter the *backroom* and pause to talk between the ice machine and a box tower of stacked paper goods.
Manager: "...So, this is in regards to the supervisory position you were expressing interest in. We discussed it at the meeting and you are really just *this* close to it." [raises index finger and thumb- emphasizing "very close"]
Employee: [mirrors the gesture] "And just what is keeping me this far away?"
Manager: "Well everyone is behind you, the other owners, me and the other manager, and even the staff members we talked to. You seem like an excellent fit..."
Employee: "...Buuut?"
Manager: "[OWNER]is the only one standing in the way. He says he needs to talk to you first."
Employee: [dull stare]
Manager: "Everyone's said how much you've stepped up and how you'd fit really well in the position, except [OWNER] says he hasn't seen it yet."
Employee: [stare continues]
Manager: [blinks uncertainly] "...Are you not interested in Supervisor anymore."
Employee: "..I am, I just don't understand the need for the hoop-jumping."
Manager: "It's [OWNER] and what m'gonna say to you is that you should just take the hit this time. Sit down with him or whatever he wants and nod and smile and say yes."
Employee: "...I think I need to know why I need to sit down with him in the first place."
Manager: "He thinks you have a bad attitude. The other owners and I all countered that, and pointed out how much you have stepped up to the job- but he said that when you got hired you basically lied to them about how available you were and then couldn't work at all..."
Employee: "..."
Manager: "Do you know what he's talking about."
Employee: "-I was hired in February and had open availibility which I worked. Signed up for summer classes around April and had limited summer availability for the first four weeks of summer. He flipped out, and I specifically arranged my schedule to appease him- Not only did I never lie, I went out of my way to fix it...so where in this I got a bad attitude, m'not sure."
Manager: "Well, like I said, just take the hit this one time and then we can get you started on where you should be."
Employee: "Sure." [pause, grin] "Thanks! -Gonna go clock in now."
~The End~
And possibly THE END of this job as well. That irritates me to no end. They just hired a new girl that has been here no more than a month that they are already TRAINING her to supervise. When I was first hired they said they were really impressed with how quick I was and how well I got on with everyone- They mentioned supervising in passing, but with the new store a few months away it was more of a future thing. What happened between then and now to make them so sketchy on the whole subject- why it was decided not to like me anymore...I have no idea.
But it's bullshit.
I know I'm a slacker and a screw-off in general, but when I go to work I do my shit and do it well. For me to have to essentially plead my case for the supervising position is demeaning. It's been earned and deserved. [OWNER] and his misgivings can bite me.
Sure, I'll sit down and "take it" from him. But I won't "take it" sitting down.
Oy... not sure what direction this one's goin.
rant, frustration, werk
