Go Go Speech Com Major

I'm so warped...

You guys seen those Autism ads yet? They start with a home-movie lookin piece of a little kid doing some activity...hitting a baseball or dancing...and then give a mind boggling statistic like: "Their chances of being a pro athlete/preforming on Broadway? 1 in somethinghundredthousand." Then it goes "The chances of child having autism? 1 in 116."

So I see what they're getting at, and how those comparisons would strike effectively...

But why is the athlete a little boy? and why is the dancer a little girl in a pink tutu?

Media is riddled with stereotypes, because they have to communicate something in a very short span of time... and we of course all have these ideas engrained in our brains to one extent or another. So I guess that I can understand, even if I don't really condone it...

It's prolly unfair to pick on the Autism ads- After all, the intent of the ad is what's important but I just saw the commercials recently and was kinda struck by how the kids are seen, which is why I'm convinced my mind is somewhat warped.

Then I stumbled across a clip about the "new girl on Sesame Street." Why not create more prominent female characters? They pointed out the cast is mostly male, something I hadn't really thought about, and I definately didn't care as a kid, and it doesn't really bother me now. But it can't hurt to put more girls in the show so on one hand, great! A little female to contend with Elmo or whatever is a good idea! ...but then again- she's a pink little fairy person.

Chicken and the egg scenario. First thought is- She's made that way to appeal to little girls, dur! But why does that appeal to little girls?

Disney Princess line? ...Sure they're main female characters which is good, yes. And save for some of the older Princesses, Disney features the brains, abilities and whatnot of their characters... but they're still "Princesses" They still come in pink packaging with little dresses- I'd like to see a Mulan in battle gear as opposed to her China-gowns, for instance... Just compare the "Princess" line to the "Hero" line for boys...

And on a side-note related to clothes- How come if I go to a site for...a soccer team we'll say...the online shop is full of real kickass looking shirts and jerseys and such until I hit the "womens" link and am brought to a page of predominatly horrible pink and sky blue colored items?

Ugh, it's so complicated sometimes...and so frustrating.
