It kind of worries me how easy it is to stalk research people online...and beyond that, how strong my desire is to do this.   All of these websites about people, it's so easy to connect from one to the other, gathering more and more information about a person.  Today I found myself spending altogether too long trying to piece people together.  I ( Read more... )

Man, I've never given this much thought to blogging and a person's online identity. Makes me feel very old, actually. The internet is the biggest difference between the world I grew up in, and the one my little sister grew up in. And you're only 4 years older than her (6 years younger than me); the world has changed a lot in a very brief time.

When I was in college, people didn't have online identities. That was before "googling" a person was even a thing you did. Blogging, Friendster, Myspace, Facebook - they weren't even on the map. Now, it's such a big part of social culture. It's amazing, really, how quickly this all developed.

When I was in high school people didn't even have cell phones. You called people at their homes, and then you met to hang out. When Natalie was in elementary school, the key to social status and friendship maintenance was AOL instant messenger. And when you had a fight, IM was the first step toward reconciliation. Then you could call. Then in person.

It's crazy how much you can find about a person on the internet today, if they're involved. Speaking of "researching", I actually found your LiveJournal site last night, after reading your email, before you sent me the link. I tried searching for "Julieanna" to no avail. Hmmm. I tried "Huliebaby" next. Bingo.

Maybe someday you'll find mine.
