This is the first time anything like that happened to me on a plane, so I don't know how common it is.

I agree with you -- kids are kids. They swap lunches, taste each other's food, etc. Even if they know they are allergic to something, they don't know enough to think of all the things it might be in. I mean some of the dried fruit we have here is marked "packaged on machines that process nuts". Kids don't know they should avoid dried apricots if they're allergic to peanuts!

But adults? If I knew a guy in my row was severely allergic to peanuts, I wouldn't open a bag of nuts around him. And if I needed to eat those nuts, I could always ask to have my seat changed. But if the guy were in first class, why even bother the people in economy with that announcement. It was just... odd.

I once had a friend who was so allergic to seafood that she couldn't eat off a plate where seafood had been unless it was scalded in hot water. You couldn't take her to a restaurant that even served seasfood. She'd been to the emergency room too many time to risk it. I wonder what her childhood was like!
