i have just discovered, to my dismay, that "three amigos" is generally considered to be a bad film. i had always taken for granted that it was one of the greatest films ever.
i mean, come on:
-the amigo salute
-"we raped the horses! and rode off on the women! and we pruned the hedges of many small villages!"
-chevy chase serenading the townsfolk with his guitar
-"good night, ned"
-that infinitely long note in the middle of the main theme
-"would you say i have a plethora of pinatas?"
clearly, i could go on and on. but now i'm forced to question all of that, because it turns out that most respectable critics panned the hell out of this film. maybe i like it so much because i was eleven when i saw it -- if ever a film were tailor-made for eleven-year-olds, this is it. anyway, i was all jazzed to share this movie with my girlfriend, but now i'm wondering if she, being a female non-eleven-year-old, might not actually enjoy it all that much.
this is a blow comparable to the great "star wars might not be the greatest film in history" revelation that i suffered in 1993.
