New screen at work. They make these LCD monstrosities huge these days. James Bond type stuff, it's the sort of machine on which you'd issue demands to 1st-world leaders.

Going as Hunter again this year. Even re-using two of the elements that comprised the original costume 8 years ago. It shouldn't be this hard to find a floppy fisherman's hat in a fashion district touting everything from military to courderoy to velour to that cheap-looking shit from American Apparel, but none were to be found. Ultimately settled on a khaki "boonie" hat, which I guess is the functional evolution of the original. For this audience, it'll be close enough- after King Of All Cosmos pretty much any offering I do will seem half-hearted.

And it is half-hearted, it's not even new. I've done this costume before. But I understand it a little bit better now, no longer just mimicking Depp from Fear & Loathing and thinking pharma is funny and assuming the worst of my fellow man with a wry 'only kidding' grin. Thompson was still writing when I last wore this getup, but now Football Season Is Over. Wikipedia has been invented and refined in the intervening years, and I understand a bit more of what he was getting at- I make no claim to an understanding beyond that trivial bit of blogotubery, but it's a trivial bit of blogotubery more than I had last time.

Thompson's indiscretions were not an endorsement for indiscretion, they were an embrace of their futility. Those who indulged were doomed; he acknowledged that he was doomed, and thus he indulged. He wasn't a standard, he was a warning. Nobility in being the best possible warning to others of your species? If so, I suppose it's a comfort to know that at your lowest, you're noble.

And if I can muster some enthusiasm, I'll entertain my contemporaries. It is important to me that I entertain.
