Title: Trying Too Late
Length: One shot
Pairing: YunJae (one sided), Jaemin
Rating: PG
Summary: It's better to have loved and lost, then never to have loved at all. Yunho thinks that whoever believes those words, can go screw themselves.
A/N: Pure angst. First time I've ended on a sad note... it's weird. It's short. Enjoy^^
Yunho shut down his computer and stared at the screen as it turned black. His tired reflection now frowned back at him. He heard the sound of fingers gliding over keys to his right.
“Changmin?”
“Hmmm?” Changmin didn’t look over as he continued typing away. His eyes glued to the words his fans had written him. Yunho quickly backtracked his train of thought. Changmin, though proven to be an excellent listener, just wasn’t the one Yunho could talk to, not about this. Though, besides going to the direct source, Changmin would most likely have the answers he needed.
Changmin looked over then and Yunho realized he had stayed silent for far too long, and act that was very un Yunho like. The leader. “Yun-”
“Forget it, I’m heading to bed, you should too.”
“I will... soon.” I should hate you... for being his, but I don’t. Yunho shook his dark thoughts away as he got up and headed to his bedroom. Junsu was in there practicing one of their newer dance routines. Which reminded Yunho of the one moment in his day he REALLY didn’t feel like remembering.
“Yunho, stop it.”
“Stop what?” Yunho shook his head again, clearing it of the memory. For now.
“Hey Junsu, do you think you could practice somewhere else, so I can get some sleep, Changmin’s coming in soon to do the same thing.”
“Yeah, no problem.” Junsu started heading to the door, past Yunho. He stopped. “You did great today, Yunho.”
“A-ah, thanks. You to.” Junsu continued looking at him.
“You know I’m here for you, if you ever... wanna talk... and stuff.”
“Yeah I know.” Junsu sighed, nodded a goodnight, and left. Goddamn, am I that obvious, can everyone tell? Where they all there when it happened? All I remember seeing is him. All I ever see is him.
“Yunho, stop it.”
“Stop what?”
“Look, I know what you’re doing...” The next words were never spoken in Yunho’s head, Yunho’s throat dried up at just the thought of hearing those words again, and to think, he had actually lived through them. Yunho rubbed his neck as he left his room and headed towards the kitchen. He hadn’t heard any sounds so he thought he was... safe? Since when did he NOT feel safe around...
“Hey.” He said it first, he said it while Yunho was still registering what he was seeing. Jaejoong.
“Hi.” Jaejoong then nodded and moved toward Yunho. And now the memory was inevitable.
”Yunho, stop it.”
“Stop what?”
“Look, I know what you’re doing, these little ‘dance’ lessons, the packed meals for just the TWO of us, the insistence to stand between us whenever you can, I know what you’re trying to do. And you have to know that... you have to realize that you’re trying too late.”
“Jaejoong...”
“I’m with Changmin, Yunho.” Jaejoong didn’t need to say anything else. He didn’t need to give anymore examples of Yunho’s increasing displays of affection or further clarify his relationship with Changmin. And that stung Yunho just as much as his words. In one sentence he had proven just how close they were... and weren’t. Yunho knew his attempts to truly show Jaejoong his heart should have started sooner. No, they SHOULD have been there all along. But they weren’t.
He had waited too long, played the role of the leader too well. He had overestimated Jaejoong’s understanding of his feelings. He thought Jaejoong knew. He thought Jaejoong would wait. He thought wrong.
Jaejoong walked towards him, then past him. He stopped briefly at his shoulder and gave it a pat. Their eyes locked briefly. God, even HE feels sorry for me.
“I’m sorry.”
“I said don’t.” Yunho had said ‘don’t’ when Jaejoong had apologized that afternoon.
“Yunho...”
“What?”
“Your voice sounds dry, you should drink some water, then go get some rest.”
“Sure thing.” Jaejoong nodded and left the kitchen. Out of all the things Yunho had expected Jaejoong to say, out of all the things he wanted Jaejoong to say, Jaejoong said exactly what Yunho needed to hear. Yunho smiled softly as he made his way to the sink.
He was biting his lip hard by the time he got there.
The End.
***************************************************
Long explanation short, this idea came after noticing some consistencies in the things Yunho said in the couple talks of the AADBSK 2 DVDS. Basically even though they would suppose to be themselves, Yunho was still being the leader who treats everyone the same. (personal opinion... duh).
