well, it wasn't a good time in Wooster. I ended up leaving at 11:30 am on Saturday and spent the entire day Saturday running around taking care of Caramel. Lets just say that he could have been charged with animal abuse if I had been willing to give up who the owner was. She lost 12 pounds, which was a fourth of her body weight! And had open wounds from recurring frost bite. The vet has her on all kinds of drugs to try to heal the wounds, and I am busy trying to get her up to a healthy weight. Lets just say it was lucky I came along when I did or she probably wouldn't have made it much longer.

owww :( How old is she? How hyper is she? Do you see the majority of the needs being psychological? I've been looking for a dog. My place probably won't be ready for one until summer, but I would be interested, depending on her special needs.

Hey Carol,
Thanks for the information. I would definitely be interested in updates on Caramel. If she's less hyper than Max was, I feel like I could handle her. I live 5 minutes from work, and I'm encouraged by the fact that I'd be able to stop in several times a day if necessary. I'm still deciding whether I can make adaptations to my life necessary for a dog, but I'm pretty sure I do want to get one this summer. I've also entertained the idea of getting a dog and cat combo to keep each other company, though the second animal would be a little down the line.

Oh you could definitely handle her, as long as you are willing to crate her! As long as you aren't against crates, you'll be fine. She is one of the most loving dogs I have ever met. She loves being with people, and bonds very quickly to people. I've had her a little less than a week and she is already very attatched to my parents. The past couple of days have gone really well. She is behaving wonderfully and I don't think there will be any major speedbumps ahead. But I'll keep you updated.

Oh, she has cried when she first got put into the crate the past two days, but she quiets down fairly quickly afterwards and seems to be doing fine the rest of the time in there.

No problem. I wasn't sure if it would be a day or a month before you got around to getting online again, so that's why I wrote all that :)

Awesome, She may be the puppy I've been looking for. I'd hope to eventually wean her off of being crated, but realize that could take some time (I also have very few valuables here that I'd worry about being chewed up). How old is she now? And she's a boxer, right?

1) it would take ALOT of work to wean her off of using a crate. I would almost say it would be impossible, but who knows ( ... )

I'll second the "you really don't want to try weaning her off the crate" statement.

We were at my parents' house one time, and everyone left for a quick trip to the store. By the time we came back (and we weren't gone for long), she had managed to open the door to the guest bedroom, drag out my bookbag, pull out everything in it, and tried to chew through my (fortunately very sturdy) glasses case. My point is just that she can't be left alone for even a short time without freaking out and chewing belongings. She has also chewed through electrical cables and shocked herself.

Interesting. Athena used to actually be terrible about chewing/destroying when she was young. Much worse than any of our other dogs, but she grew out of it with age. She didn't have anxiety, though. I would just hate for Caramel to have to sit in a cage all day. In that way, the ideal for her would probably be someone like my mom, who's home most of the day. I am definitely still interested, though, and she's really adorable, the picture did work.

yeah, lost of dogs have chewing problems that they grow out of, but that often has to do with either a) they were taken from their littermates too young or b) because they do it when they are puppies because it feels good (teething and such) and then often continue doing it when they are older because they think it is okay.
anxiety is much worse and I doubt she will ever "grow out of it." We even tried medicating her for it and she got worse instead of better :(
I'm glad you liked the picture :) She is relaly adorable. Mom loves her because she actually wraps her arm around your arm when she wants to be close to you. Mom thinks it is just too cute.

Why aren't you pressing animal abuse charges?

lost of reasons, some are common sense reasons, but most are personal reasons.
