Job-hunting

Jul 06, 2007 13:15

I am feeling more sympathy for my father than usual. Job-hunting is a most arduous task, assuredly guaranteed to make you doubt your own aptitudes and worth. My only source of knowledge of vacancies is the Daily Prophet's job section. Well, a friend of mine forcibly escorted me to the muggle job centre, but the interview did not proceed ( Read more... )

Oh dear Wayne, that must have been terribly uncomfortable.

You know, wizards should have a job centre like Muggles do. It would save a lot of effort. Has there been anything suitable in the Daily Prophet?

It was a mite uncomfortable, yes. It was also rather unnerving to be addressed as though I was stupid for having no qualifications. I informed the lady I studied at a private school which did not follow the National Curriculum, but she was not sympathetic. Still, at least I am registered there now, so I get jobseekers allowance and am not so poor as to be a burden on my parents.

There has not been much of use in the Daily Prophet. Most of the adverts seem aimed at people who left school some time ago and have work experience. i will keep looking, though. I probably should have started looking earlier in the year, like you, but I did not want the extra distraction from NEWTs - I am easily enough distracted as it is.

Don't Muggles have something called an IQ test which is meant to somehow find out how intelligent you are? I wonder if I could somehow trick Crabbe into taking one - oh, that's mean Stephen. If you took one of those, maybe they'd realise you're actually quite bright even though you don't have any of their qualifications. Of course, anyone should be able to tell within a minute of talking to you that you're far from dumb. So perhaps that makes it worse in a way, that you're obviously intelligent yet you don't have anything from their education system. And now I'll shut up because I'm not helping.

Yes. I've heard of that, but I don't think they use it for jobs. I would rather not have a muggle job anyway, to be honest. I do not want to live in the muggle world the way that my mother does.

Yes. Oops.

Much as it pains me to say it, you were right all along, but I did not notice my own interest. I am endeavouring to think of a subtle way of making known my feelings. Given how much poetry I have already written about her, that is probably not going to work.

Subtle, Cad. Try a dictionary.

Don't think subtle's really working for you, Wayne. I think it's reached the point where you've just got to bite the bullet and do something about it, like ask her to the movies or something. And try not to talk about Quidditch so much. Well, talk about it a bit, because it's something you have in common and she likes it too, but don't just talk about it, if you know what I'm saying.

It may seem kind of pointless since I blabbed, but it was either that or shove you of the top of Gryffindor Tower. Or shove myself off the top of Gryffindor Tower it will still mean more if you actually say it.

How about I try subtle for a week and you try unsubtle for a week? Right. Tactful. Quiet. Think before you speak. I can do this...

Fine. It's a deal. I will do... something and you will do nothing. I need to consider what that something will be. Not the movies.... maybe the theatre? Or maybe I'll just wait till I next see her and try to say something.

Open mouth, insert foot. You certainly have a way of getting your point across, Cadwallader. It's so...tactful and discrete. Ha ha ha poor Wayne.

WHAT!? Oh, but it's cool because she's actually liked him since before Christmas and no Parvati, it's not good to betray confidences. Even if it's a nice betrayal? Well, maybe...um, no.

Just ignore him. I find that's usually best.
