one more resolution

Here's a resolution I forgot to make at New Year's: read more books. For some reason last year was a real low point in my leisure reading. It started off with a lot of thesis writing and theory reading which always made me feel guilty whenever I so much as looked at a "fun" book (I could be reading Foucault right now! What am I doing with this?). I was also struggling with Harry Potter in Spanish which is fun but also way more work than reading something in English or, you know, staring at the TV. Then I started this farce known as “a full-time job” and reading on the job became somehow inappropriate while off the job I just wanted to watch TV and surf the net.

Which brings us to a month or two ago when I decided to revert back to my natural reading tendency and allow myself to simultaneously read four books like I want to. This has resulted in actual moving forward of the reading process. So, here are the books I’m currently in the middle of:

~ Prep (for book club)
~ Harry Potter 6 in Spanish
~ The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (just started reading in bookstore and had to buy)
~ Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan (also started reading in a bookstore and just had to buy)
~ Absurdistan (am not so much in the middle of as have on my nightstand. It was a gift and keep meaning to actually read it)

Finished so far this year:
~ Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain
~ Songbook by Nick Hornby (actually I’ve read it before and just re-read parts. It confirmed my belief that this is the only book by Nick Hornby that I don’t like)
~ Rant by Chuck Palahniuk (HIS worst book too)
~ Thank You For Smoking

Mean to read:
~ Master and Margarita in Russian (had it borrowed from the library for months and never started. On the bus ride to return it because my renewals had ended I finally started and found that it’s damn good)
