Finn has always been apprehensive about entering Kurt’s room without him being home. Despite the numerous times that Kurt has told him it’s okay that Kurt has nothing to hide, Finn always feels like he’s intruding on Kurt’s personal space. He feels the same way about going into his parent’s room, or being in one of his friend’s rooms when they’re not around. The problem is that Kurt is a bit of a hoarder. If something goes missing in the Hummel-Hudson household, chances are the item can be found in Kurt’s room. That’s why Kurt laughingly issued permission to his entire family to enter his room if they need something. This time Finn’s searching for the box of black pens he knows his mom bought last weekend. Finn can’t find another pen in the house, and he really needs to start on his homework, so he reluctantly enters Kurt’s room.

He walks over to the desk, intending on grabbing the first pen he sees in the drawer and then leaving. That plan goes out the window when he actually opens Kurt’s drawer. The box of pens he was looking for are sitting on top of an open notebook. The same thing is written over and over again, sometimes in Kurt’s neat scrawl, other times in angry-looking block letters, the paper torn in places from the pen pressing so hard into it: “Who cares about you?”

Finn feels his blood go cold. Is this really what Kurt thinks, that no one cares about him? With a shaky hand Finn pulls out the pens, and after a moment of hesitation, he pulls the notebook out too, along with a stack of post-it notes Kurt has in his desk drawer. He flips to a blank page of Kurt’s notebook and begins writing “I care, Kurt. I do” over and over again, long after his hand begins to cramp, until the page is full. He replaces the notebook where he found it, then turns to the post-it notes. He bites his lip before messily writing, “I care Kurt. Of course I care. You’re my brother, and I love you.” Finn sticks the post-it on Kurt’s light-switch, grabs the box of pens that started this whole thing, then leaves his brother’s room.

That night during dinner Kurt makes no mention of finding anything in his room, so Finn doesn’t either. Everything that night seems completely normal, just like every other night they’ve had since they moved into their new house. That is, until Finn is decides it’s time for bed. He walks into his room and goes for his own light switch, when his fingers graze over a sticky-note. He pulls it off and smiles. The note reads “Thanks, Finn. I needed to hear that. I love you too, brother.”

Finn knows that this won’t be the end of this. He knows that he and Kurt will need to talk about what made Kurt believe that no one cared about him. But for now, having the reassurance that Kurt understands that someone does care about him, it’s enough.
