1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?

Got married.
Went on a honeymoon.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

No, I didn't as per usual but I'll make some for next year anyway. You never know, one day I may keep one.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

In my mothers group there were about 6 babies born.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Mikey. I would say that we weren't close IRL but I loved him, if that makes sense.

5. What countries did you visit?

New Zealand.

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?

ENOUGH UNBROKEN SLEEP.
A part time, interesting, well paid job.
Some time off duty, as in not responsible for children.

7. What dates from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

25/6/12 Mikey leaving too soon.
23/9/12 Got married.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Pulling off the wedding and reception without a hitch. A big achievement for someone who is naturally disorganised anyway plus sleep deprived.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Wasting time.
Not being emotionally present and honest.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Depression. My cross to bear for this lifetime, I think.
Successfully dealt with my dentist phobia and went and had 12 fillings.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

A wedding ceremony and reception.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

Julia Gillards speech where she broke her silence about her treatment as a woman, expressed her anger and said 'enough.'

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

The gun lobby in the US with their response to yet another mass shooting.

14. Where did most of your money go?

School fees.
Wedding reception.
Honeymoon.

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?

I walk the line. Johnny Cash.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?
Happier, because I put Annabel in our bed with the first wake up. She wakes up a couple of times more but because she is in our bed I can fall back to sleep quickly.

ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner, thanks to all that hiking in NZ.
iii. richer or poorer
Richer, thanks to stepson finishing private school education.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Self care. Time to myself, doing stuff that makes me happy, eating well. Something I am naturally really crap at.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Allowing the children to vegetate in front of various screens.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

We had a sleep in and got up at 7. We went to the beach and then came home and opened the presents. We spent the day at home and then my family and husbands family arrived around 4. We had christmas dinner and it went really well. Hooray for living in a massive house!

21. What LJ users did you meet for the first time?

Nil. I wish LJ were more active. I didn't post much this year, mostly because I am aware of my cognitive decline (age? early alzheimers? sleep deprivation?) and also because I bore myself.

22. Did you fall in love in 2012?

Yes. With my husband. Pass the sick bag.

23. How many one-night stands?

Look away now, TMI folks. Husband and I don't have sex much thanks to the sleep deprivation but when we do it is like a fantastic one night stand.

24. What was your favorite TV program?

Breaking Bad. Nurse Jackie. Forbrydelsen.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

No.

26. What was the best book you read?

Drinking: A Love Story by Carolyn Knapp. She is inside my head.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

I was a fortysomething saddo and replayed a lot of the Smiths.

28. What did you want and get?

Lifetime financial security. We (husband and I) never have to work again, thanks to working hard and saving hard when we were younger.

29. What did you want and not get?

SLEEP
Time off, and I have only myself to blame for not making it happen.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?

The kids went to see The Hobbit in NZ, released there a couple of weeks early. I remember the relief at leaving them for a few hours with only Annabel to look after.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 44. I went out for dinner with husband for indian food, since the kids don't like it.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

SLEEP. SLEEP. SLEEP. DID I MENTION THE SLEEP?

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?

Mainstream. Middle class. Boring. Nice shoes.

34. What kept you sane?

Er. I would have liked something to keep me sane but frankly there wasn't anything.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Nigella or Jamie. One of my christmas traditions is watching in the lead up to christmas day the aspirational cooking shows. As husband says, Nigella is a 'spectacular cook'.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Climate change. see my next post.

37. Who did you miss?

Mikey.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Priest who conducted our wedding. She had a PhD in microbiology and is setting up an algae farm in Karatha.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.

You have to attend to your own needs before you can take care of others.
Go to-to-toe with lifes fuckwits, because they always back down.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all tbe time
I keep the ends out for the ties that bind
Because you're mine, I walk the line.
