When we were in Egypt last summer, we spent the last three or four days on the Red Sea. It was the most beautiful ocean I've ever seen. We went snorkeling in front of our hotel, the Movenpick, and when we were about 100 meters out we were able to dive down over coral and swim with schools of fish. The Movenpick was this huge resort, where ( Read more... )

Hey Annie,

what happened there was really dreadful. The People who died were all civilians. Egyptians of course, but also a number of tourists.
But the assault on mainly the touristindusty by lunatics who abuse the religion to do such things isn't new in this area.
The conflict is older than our age is and many thousand people have died.
So I was deeply impressed, when your sister Grace told me that she was planning to spent a long period of time down there.
I mean, there are many reasons for a visit. Besides the nature which is overwhelming as you described it, this land makes you follow the roots of our culture.
The history is huge. The Kings and Queens, the Pharaohs and Pyramids and the stories around them are basic content of every History book. And basically that's all I know. I mean, we worked with our history books at school, at my school we had to take Latin, so that we read all the stories ("which is in Latin a very little fun") and had definitely as I remember some plans to travel there, but you are getting scared.
There are periods of one or two years, when there happens nothing, but you never know and that's the fact which scares me too. I think that you're right, when you say that not traveling in such areas, where they are depending to the tourist industry gives those who want to terrorize more power, especially because people who get unemployed and frustrated have a higher potential to attend terroristic organizations, if this makes sense.
I think that everyone should be aware of the situation before he/she travels down to Egypt. It is a risc in fact, but without the bombings it must be a great, great place.

I'm happy that you got save back, so that you caught the great impressions.
Did you take underwater pics? If so, please put one up here.
Bye Orty
