These are a few of my favorite things
I was reading high school m/m fic at fictionpress (a vice, I admit) when, understandably, my mind wandered to HS AU.
Yesss. Tactics! Haruka could be the legendary bad boy BMOC, and for some reason shrouded in rumor he's been in a coma, and then Kantarou is a freshmen who has heard the story and has been idolizing him these many years, visits him at the hospital and wakes him up. And Haruka has amnesia, so Kantarou gives him his cute nickname. And against all logic he goes back to school with Kantarou! And Youko is Kantarou's token girl friend that he eats lunch alone with until Haruka comes along and makes them a trio. And the makeover scene! And they hang out and solve mysteries and try to avoid Kantarou's editor on the school paper. And Sugino's a teacher who remembers Haruka's glory days and finds the whole thing ludicrous, not so much that Haruka's still in HS but that's he's hanging around with plebes. And Raikou's older brother was Haruka's rival/enemy, so Raikou is out to prove himself. And what's the truth of Haruka's past, anyway?
And Mu would be Mu.
So the first thing I thought of when I'd worked through the above was Sket Dance (dont' die!), and the second was The Best Years Of Our Lives, which makes more sense, really. I thought this story was fun and thinking about it now, it keeps growing on me; fanfiction relies a lot on commonality of experience with the source characters, and to use that in such a form with a swap of familiarity with story...well, I'm not good with talking through such things.
