down by the bay...

where the watermelons grow, back to my home, i dare not go! (for if i did, my mother would say, have you ever seen a whale swimming in a pail? Down by the bay....)-- i had that in my head

I really enjoyed this poem, probably because i grew up in the Philippines, and experienced the sea............ quite often, and in a similar fashion to what people would see in Key West. I found that the descriptions, and the language of the natural beauty and occurrences of the sea were so well described in the poem.

I think that order is natural in Key West, as in all beach areas. The tide comes in, it goes out, and cleanses, it goes in, and out. The sun goes up and down, up and down, and the birds quiet at night. The crowds come and go. The animals also have their patterns. The boats lights take over at night, creating a lower set of stars in the sky. The quiet hush of a beach at night where you can only hear the waves crashing against the beach. And when storms come, they go again, and the nature is renewed, re-birth occurs, and life continues in its natural course of things. I'm sure that before Key West was even introduced to humans, the order was much more apparent. The shells being formed, rocks being broken down into sand. Animals performing their daily routines, and nature performing it's.

In the Philippines, as with many beach areas, the tree line usually stops at a certain point, close to where the sand begins (usually) and the sand takes over and carries on until the sea. You don't usually see random trees growing a foot from the beginning of the ocean and getting wet during high tide. The cleansing of the sand by the waves when the tide comes in and out, and the abundance of treasure (the items vary depending on where you are, from beautiful shells, diamonds (in South Africa- though if you find one you apparently have to turn it over to the government!), garbage, seaweed, wildlife, etc. when the tide has gone back out. You'll notice if you are there shortly after the tide has gone out, that usually they are in straight lines, or fairly straight. And there are times, when the sand is untouched by anything and it is either extremely smooth, or ridged, like it had a perm or something!

That's what i like about this poem, it brings back memories of the beauty of nature on the beach, and the order that is there, not because of humans, but because of nature. I know i didn't touch on the singer, but quite honestly, i have no interest in her, my interest is in the scenery/nature of this poem :)
