I started writing this a while back, for a flashfiction challenge on the subject of jewelry, but I thought I didn't get it done in time, and then I forgot about it. When I uncovered it this morning, I read it over and thought that actually it was almost finished as it stood. This is really heartbreaking; I feel so bad for Frannie, trapped in that world, with that sense of gender: with those women and those men, who I think include all the cops at the station except Fraser and even her brother, so there's really not a way out there for her, either. I hope that she turns her emerging jeweler's eye to realizing that all that glitters is not gold, or even diamonds: that just as there might be a man she wouldn't want a ring from, there might be a life she wouldn't need a ring in. Brava.
