Days like this always kind of throw me for a loop. I'm always rushing around here at work trying to keep everything running smoothly. And then as I'm rushing back to deliver a message to a patient, the nurses tell me to hold up. Then I hear the Dr. behind the curtain revealing that the patient, 51 years old has colon cancer. To hear the wife intially reacting, see the dazed, bloodshot look in his eyes as he takes it all in. It just puts everything in perspective. The little crap I do and worry about everyday just doesn't matter that much. Although it does make me feel better to think that we probably saved his life today or at least prolonged it immensely. Its in a good spot, it is highly operable and not as advanced.

And then it makes me think of all my parents. They all are 50 except Mom, who will be in October. Only one of them has had a screening, although they are usually covered 100% every 10 years for people over 50. Please ask your parents or loved ones if they are 50 or over if they have thought about getting a colonoscopy to screen for cancer. It may seem really scary, or awkward or embarrasing, but I promise you, on this side of it is a totally normal and unremarkable procedure, and also very quick and easy day surgery. The prep really is the worst part because you freaking go to the bathroom all night until there is nothing left. Usually there is nothing scary to find, but at least you have peace of mind and the Dr. can remove polyps that can become cancerous later. Anyways. That is all. Something to think about.
