Oh Live Journal, what a day! I got called to do my first ever sub job this morning. Mr. Breedlove (yes, the same guy who was my principal in elem. school -- he found me in the 95-96 yearbook and showed it to me) called me at 7:00 so I had to rush out pretty quick. First grade. Oh my gosh. What a hard job. I'm so glad now that I have confirmed my suspicions that I would never want to teach little ones. They're so...young! And needy! I'm exhausted, but I wanted to outline a few +'s and -'s from the day.

+ Being called Mrs. Cracker, Mrs. Crocker, Mrs. Lapper - these kids crack me up.
+ Actually teaching a lesson and giving examples and stuff -- I really enjoyed that part.
+ A couple of kids hugged me and thanked me -- that made me feel good.
+ Oh man, the breaks when they go to recess and lunch and p.e. and stuff are so amazing -- I totally related to the teacher on Billy Madison that eats glue during recess...you're just like so glad they're gone for a minute, you just want to have a drink or get a massage or something -- It's so nice to have some peace and quiet.
+ Even though my day wasn't so great, I have a really good feeling about teaching, I still have a big grin on my face.

- I'm not very good at disciplining the kids yet. I feel like I'm sort of just nagging and saying the same things over and over again -- I need to build confidence and learn more tools that work.
- I didn't get to eat breakfast and my baked potato was less than stellar for lunch (and difficult to eat with a spork), so I'm really hungry and I kind of got cranky at the end of the day.
- When one kid was sick -- he threw up like first thing in the morning and went home, they all were "sick" and I had to deal with their "tummy aches," and "chin, ear, nose, throat and yes, even hand aches" all day.
- I had a lot of trouble staying on time today, so their assignments were a little rushed.-- I think they did ok, though.
