If you aren't too famillar with the city, I would avoid staying too far south of the park. I would absolutely not stay south of Roosevelt, and be hesitant to stay more than a few blocks south of Congress. Certainly don't stay west of the Dan Ryan expressway (I 90/94) but personally I wouldn't stay west of the river. The farther north you go, the more you will pay, but the nicer the area. I'd stay in the river north area, gold coast, or along the north bend of the river along n. Wacker Drive or in the heart of the loop. The near west side and south loop have been getting better in the past ten years, but I would not choose to stay there. They used to be really bad.

I really don't have the need for staying in the city when I go home, but when I stayed at the Hyatt I college for new years eve that was located on n. Wacker Drive, I had a nice stay. It was located right near Wacker and Michigan Ave. just on the south bank of the river. Just a bit south of the magnificent mile. For tourists, it's a nice area.

Staying in the burbs are cheaper, the tricky part is if you don't have a car where to stay. If staying outside the city is something you might consider, try to see if you can find a hotel in or close to a downtown of a suburb that has a Metra train line running through. Then you could take the Metra train into union station. The town I grew up in has a train station and if I catch an express I'm in union station in 20 minutes. However, I am not aware of a hotel within walking distance of the train station. But if you can find a hotel with walking distance of a train station in the burbs, it would be a suitable alternative.
