FIRST OF ALL - HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now reveal time...
This was a really different year for me!
In the past, I've always been one of only a few people I knew who participated (and the fandoms I was involved in heavily didn't have a lot of Yuletiders, either). I always got someone I didn't know, and always wrote in fandoms I'd never done...
This year, it was the first year where I knew a large number of my friends were participating. AND I got a person I knew for my main assignment. Now, I was pretty much the world's worst secret-keeper because I talked about Yuletide constantly on Twitter, so I'm sure she figured me out after she tweeted: "If you figure out who received you in #Yuletide before the reveal, do you get a prize for RUINING YULETIDE?" So,
weasleytook, even if you didn't figure me out then, after our long multi-person moaning session a couple days ago, you surely knew by now. :D
And now I can also mention that one of the treats I wrote, I uploaded incorrectly, so my recipient got a notification. After a flurry of "OMG I AM SUCH AN IDIOT" PMs, I calmed down. And
betternovembers/
juniperlane was so nice about it, too. :)
However!
I was lucky to snag three pinch hits from people I didn't know, so I at least got to be a sweet little nonnie with those.
The first three were for
weasleytook:
Monday, Monday (1430 words)
Fandom:
Mad MenRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Peggy Olsen, Don Draper, Megan Calvet, Joan Holloway
Summary: Post S4. “Oh, Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be.”
I matched
weasleytook on three fandoms, so I decided to tackle this one first. Honestly, I thought it was only just okay. It met the prompt, but was nothing special. I credit a lot of its actual decent-ness to
ndnickerson, who encouraged me to fill out the Joan and Peggy scene in the last section. Surprisingly, this is the story which got the most recs!
Revolver (2090 words)
Fandom:
SpacedRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Tim Bisley/Daisy Steiner
Characters: Brian Topp, Mike Watt, Twist Morgan, Marsha Klein
Summary: Just breathe, Daisy. That's right. He'll be here. He said, well, rather, lifted his head from the PlayStation controller and tossed over his shoulder, "Let's give this a go, shall we?" the day after he came to get me from the train station. And I didn't misread him. No. I'm sure I didn't.
Time for another drink. MULTIMEDIA - COMIC BOOK PAGE
At first, though I really wanted to write this prompt, I was a bit nervous, because she mentioned the special features on the DVDs, and I'd never seen them. But Netflix came through yet again, and I found the featurette where Simon and Jess did future Tim/Daisy. Now, don't ask me where the idea to do a comic book page came from. I just knew I wanted something in the style of the fantasy sequences of the show, and since Tim is a comic book artist, it just clicked. The worst part was not finding the proper photos and screencaps, but finding the right GIMP filters to make it look drawn/painted! But I was SO frickin' proud of it afterward. ♥
So much thanks to
ionlylurkhere and
blithers (a new friend who helped so much this year!) for beta-ing.
They Never Covered Parenting at the Farm (934 words)
Fandom:
Chuck (TV)Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: John Casey, Mary Bartowski, Morgan Grimes, Alex McHugh
Summary: Colonel John Casey is a very protective father - Mary Bartowski, a very determined mother.
I'm sure the fact that you had three gifts, and then suddenly only two, then back to three, confused you. Sorry! I was afraid I'd get in trouble for having a less than 1000 word story in the main archive, so I shifted it over later. ANYWAY, Casey is so fun to write! And your prompt was begging me to write it, so I couldn't resist.
ndnickerson and
blithers did beta work on this!
Somewhere Inside (I cannot find the feeling I got from you) (0 words)
Fandom:
Community RPFRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Donald Glover/Gillian Jacobs
Characters: Yvette Nicole Brown, Dan Harmon, Danny Pudi
Summary: The public tweets between these two are only half the story. MULTIMEDIA - ALL GRAPHICAL, really 380 words
A treat for
betternovembers. Actually this was ANONFAIL in more than one way - because I'd actually mixed up her request with
myr_soleil's in my mind. So Myr, for all intents and purposes, I did write this for you as well, lol. Again, Meg was so nice about the whole thing, so *hugs*
I guess once I got the multimedia bug, I had to carry it on here. I doubt the story would have been nearly as fun without the graphics. Luckily Twitter uses all Arial and Times New Roman, so I didn't have too much trouble manipping everything. :) This one also got posted and removed repeatedly, as I learned from elynross whether I was allowed to post in the main collection, or had to wait for Madness (the latter).
oliveoyl helped with the beta on this one!
Go Straight | Go Left (1378 words)
Fandom:
TerriersRating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Major Character Death
Relationships: Katie Nichols/Britt Pollack
Characters: Hank Dolworth, Original Female Character
Summary: "So what do you say, partner? Which way will it be?" Set post-series.
A treat for
perdiccas. I don't think many people read this one. The series was criminally underwatched, so I suppose it's to be expected. But I had the plot bunny after watching the series finale, and had to write it. I've never had to warn for character death before, though! If you do read it, know that it's a tearjerker! Not my usual fare, but I enjoyed writing it. :) Luna from #yuletide chat, who let me beta her
much better Terriers fic, was a fast and helpful beta!
Don't You Just Hate That? (4663 words)
Fandom:
Phineas and FerbRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Candace Flynn, Phineas Flynn, Ferb Fletcher, Isabella Garcia-Shapiro, Perry (Phineas And Ferb), Major Monogram (Phineas and Ferb), Vanessa Doofenshmirtz, Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Jeremy Johnson, Lawrence Fletcher, Linda Flynn, Baljeet Rai, Buford van Stomm, Carl Karl
Summary: Phineas and Ferb build a backyard carnival, Doofenschmirtz builds a Despise-inator, everything goes horribly and wonderfully awry... you know, the usual.
A treat for
eustacia_vye28, and my longest! I was looking for a Phineas and Ferb story to write, because my daughter is obsessed with the show right now. And since the recipient was also a mom, I felt a kinship. ♥ My daughter came up with the "Big Idea" of the carnival and "Despise-inator" - so I did my best to work those in. It was hugely fun! Thanks to
allthingsholy for knitting jokes, and
mrsvc and
menacherie for beta prowess!
Happiness Is... (2014 words)
Fandom:
30 RockRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Kenneth Parcell, Jenna Maroney, Tracy Jordan, Liz Lemon, Jonathan (30 Rock), Jack Donaghy, Grizz Griswold
Summary: ...Helping Others. For Kenneth Parcell, that is the single greatest joy on God's green Earth.
A pinch-hit for
kenazfiction. This was my fastest write - I'd actually marked the request for possible treating before the pinch-hit went out - and I had no idea I could channel Kenneth so easily! Probably the most just plain FUN of the set. philosapphic and
blithers (as well as
ishie who cheerleaded) beta'd this one!
Veridian Beauty (1704 words)
Fandom:
Better Off TedRating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Rose Crisp, Veronica Palmer, Phil Myman, Lem Hewitt, Ted Crisp
Summary: At Veridian Dynamics, we're putting the future leaders of tomorrow to work! MULTIMEDIA - Fan-Made Veridian Dynamics Commercial
A pinch-hit for foursweatervests. For sheer what is my Muse ON?!, this story wins. I wrote it, and was pretty happy with it, too, but I wasn't sure what to do with the commercial section! My betas suggested writing it in script format, I briefly contemplated an animated gif. Then it hit me - I've been learning Sony Vegas lately... why not give it a shot? Luckily, Audacity stripped out the original voiceover quite easily, and I found workable stock footage on the web. It actually took less time than I expected. If you never watched Better Off Ted (and WHY NOT?), you should still watch
one of their hilarious commercials and compare it to
the one I did. Astraev from #yuletide chat,
easytangent and
monkeyonthelam helped with the beta!
Daydream Believer (2072 words) by Anonymous
Fandom:
They Might Be Giants - The Mesopotamians (Song)Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Hammurabi (The Mesopotamians), Sargon (The Mesopotamians), Gilgamesh (The Mesopotamians), Ashurbanipal (The Mesopotamians)
Summary: When you have four ancient kings of Mesopotamia in a band together - Sargon, Hammurabi, Ashurbanipal and Gilgamesh - the obvious comes to mind: ROAD TRIP!
A pinch-hit for
rho. As everyone who knows me knows, I am a HUGE TMBG nerd. When this request came across the pinch hit list I had to have it! I'd actually marked it for possible treating, just like the 30 Rock fic. Once I started writing, I wasn't sure I was getting the tone right. It was a lot more bittersweet than I'd expected (I thought it would end up cracky), but in the end, I think it was better as a result. This is another fic that
only requires watching the original video to understand canon. Beta help from
fictionalknight and
jheaton!
Well, that's it! I had a very fun and satisfying Yuletide! Thank you to everyone who read, commented, kudo'd, recced and helped with these! ♥
