Aunt Jen

Wednesday was one of those days where it felt like everything was happening at once. My very, very good friend Emily called me telling me that her surgery (related to fertility treatments and trying to conceive, I will not bore you with the gross details) has been scheduled for Friday (today). We knew the surgery was a possibility once the doctor told her she had endrometriosis, and she had previously asked me to come and visit to help out around the house while she was recovering. Rob and I met Jon and Emily while we were stationed in Florida the first time around, at Patrick AFB, which is due east of Orlando. After we had been there a year, Rob was called on to sponsor a new arrival, which turned out to be Jon and Emily. Emily and I became those sort of instant friends who felt like we knew each other for ten years already.  We had a lot in common (both history teachers, huge nerds, married to engineers) so didn't hesitate when she asked me to come help.

Right after she called me, and I knew I'd be gone for a few days, I started to think of all the things I needed to do before I left the house: leave note for Rob on how much coffee to use each day (he makes terrible coffee. Ask him about making baby jesus cry, seriously), book flights for Buffalo (thanksgiving with my sister!!!! So excited. Used credit card rewards points! Even better!!!), email school I volunteer at (let them know i would not be at book fair, I would feel terrible if they thought I just did not show up after I committed to helping out), and make sure there was easily prepped food for Rob to eat, since i knew he was having a very long week of reading contract proposals. I get to the commissary, and it turns out they are finished up the renovation, so the frozen section is practically barren. Add that to the crappy produce and we *poof* have practically no veggies in the house. And the two of us can put down serious amounts of them: We split bunches of asparagus and broccoli, although I'd gladly eat the whole thing. So I was a bit peeved, and wished I had bought more when I went shopping two weeks ago. The cold foods (other than lunch meat and milk) were also non existent, so I couldn't get cream cheese, block cheddar, or cheese for sandwiches, although they did have an amazing amount of string cheese, just not the organic stuff I had a coupon for *sigh*. Couple that with the items I was going to buy at Publix because of their bogos or store specific coupons, and I had all these bits and pieces of meals but not enough to make a whole meal. Hello frozen pizza!

This morning, Emily and Jon's son asked me if I was a good enough friend to be called "Aunt Jen". So cute!
