Meryl and Don went back to their home in Connecticut so Meryl could pack a bag for Maine.
Don was not crazy about the idea of her being alone in Maine but the therapist seemed to think that it would help, and that was all he wanted was to help Meryl. Unbeknownst to Meryl, Don had a guard hired to watch their home in Maine just in case Jack was able to discover that she was up there on her own.
As Meryl packed a bag she could feel Don watching her. Once she had everything she needed, including her childhood friend Betty, she placed the bag on the bed next to her coat and purse and made her way over to him.
Once she was standing in front of him. She said in a voice that was only a shade louder than a whisper.
“I’m sorry you know?”
Looking at her with confusion she continued before he had a chance to speak.
“I’m sorry about the accident, that I can’t remember, Jack. I’m sorry for all of it.”
Taking her hands in his, his eyes locked in on her thin gold wedding ring that rested on her left hand, tracing it with his index finger he tenderly kissed her forehead. “None of this is your fault. Sometimes things happen and no one is to blame. You didn’t choose to get in that accident, to forget about our life, and you certainly didn’t ask for Jack to inject himself into our life. Now I’m going to be honest I don’t like the idea of you being in Maine by yourself, but if this can help you than that’s what we are going to do. I don’t want you to worry about a thing ok? I want you to take this time and relax, take the pressure off, go for a long walk, read, take a bath, watch your game shows. There is no pressure here okay?”
She couldn’t help but smile at his words. Removing one of her hands from his she placed in on his cheek. “You really are an exceptional human being; I don’t know many people who would put up with all of this. Thank you for being so patient with me. I’m going to do my best to relax but I’m also going to do everything I can to remember. I want to remember you, because if these last weeks are any indication of the kind of man you are than I need to remember you and our life.”
“No matter how long it takes I’m not going anywhere. Even if you never remember our life, I will and if I have to make you fall in love with me all over again than that’s what I’ll do.”
Truly loved by his words, “I already do love you. You have been wonderful to me and I can never thank you enough for that, just by being calm and steady you have already made me love you.”
At just that moment there was a car horn heard from outside, knowing it was the car Don hired to drive Meryl to Maine, because of her condition the doctors weren’t exactly thrilled with the prospect of her flying, feeling that driving would be less of a stress on her physically Don had hired a car.
“It’s time for you to go. Call me when you get there so I know you’re okay?”
Giving him a smile she nodded to his question, kissing his cheek and grabbing her things she made her way down the stairs and out the door prepared to do whatever was necessary to remember and get her life back.
Meanwhile Don had his own plan. Once the car carrying Meryl drove away Don got into his own car and made his way to New York.
Since Meryl had told him about Jack’s impromptu visit to their home he had someone following him, not wanting to be blindsided again. He had it on good authority that Jack had returned to New York and that is exactly where Don was headed; feeling it was long overdue to have yet another chat with the man who was trying to sabotage his wife’s recovery and, already, fragile state.

Later that night Meryl was sitting in their cabin. She had called Don to assure him she had gotten there safely and now as it was closing in on midnight she was sitting in the living room curled up in a blanket with Betty sitting on the floor in front of the raging fire she had started in the fire place.
She had asked the driver to stop at a book store on the way up to the cabin. She had purchased some books on memory loss and how to help the process along. The book she was currently reading suggested meditation, finding a calm relaxing place and focusing on something that made you feel safe and connected and letting the mind just drift to where it chose.
Placing the book down she decided to give it a try. She must of sat there like that for an hour before she fell asleep, holding Betty close to her chest.

Back in New York Don was walking up to Jacks door waiting for an answer but not getting one. Peeking through the living room window of the house that Jack was renting trying to see if anyone was home he soon realized no one was. His next move was one that under normal circumstances he never would have considered, but these were not normal circumstances. He had seen a video online about someone who forgot there house keys and was able to enter their home using a credit card provided the dead bolt was not locked.
Within moments Don was standing in the entry way to Jacks home, surprised at how easy it was to get in and thankful that there was no security system.
Walking around the living room he found nothing out of the ordinary. Making his way up the stairs he found himself in a small walk in closet just off of what, he assumed, was Jack’s bedroom and found a shrine of Meryl.
The pictures spanned back all the way to when Meryl was pregnant with Henry, her winning her Academy Awards for Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie’s Choice, up to the present time with photos of her shooting August: Osage County.
Don thought he was disgusted before but now he thought he was going to be sick. This man had been stalking Meryl for over 30 years and her recent accident had only provided him with the window he needed to work himself onto Meryl.
Once he was in his car he decided to check in with his private investigator to see just what Jack was up to now, fortunately it wasn’t anything that could be considered out of the ordinary.
Walking into his apartment he couldn’t help but notice just how dark and cold everything felt without his wife there. His eyes couldn’t help but stop on the table that was located in the entry way; pictures of there wedding day, a photo of each of their children as newborns and a more recent photo that was taken of the two of them in their home in Connecticut. He remembered that day like it was yesterday.
The photo was taken mere days before her accident. She had just finished shooting August: Osage County and they had decided to spend a few, uninterrupted, days together. They had been genuinely happy, happier than ever actually. Sitting down by the water just being with each other, it was truly a perfect day. He now had such mixed feelings about that picture. If he had known than what he knew now he never would have let them leave that spot down by the water, he would have told her every second of those three days telling her how much he loved her and how much better she made him and his life.

It was the next night, Meryl had spoken with Don letting him know that she was okay and was doing her best to relax. The night before she had felt more relaxed than she could remember thanks to the meditation book she had read so she decided to give it another try. Resuming her spot back in front of the fireplace with Betty in her arms she soon fell asleep.
Sometime later in a deep sleep Meryl was experiencing what could only be called a collage of memories; standing with her father in a simple white dress, being pregnant with Henry and her girls feeling them move around inside of her, them being born and hearing them cry letting her know that they were alright, winning her Academy Awards for Kramer, Sophie and The Iron Lady, all the time she was nominated and was passed over for someone else and always having Don next to her resting his hand on her knee assuring her that the ceremony was rigged, being away on location and talking to Don and the kids daily talking about their days and what they’re plans were, the deaths of her parents, and the weeks before the accident when Jack reappeared, out of the blue, Don’s concern and wonderment about why this virtual stranger would now be such a present in their lives, and finally the accident that changed her life.
She woke up with a start in a cold sweat looking around the cabin realizing where she was and remembering why she was up at the cabin alone. Looking down at Betty with a big smile on her face and a feeling of relief in her heart she packed her bag, grabbed her coat, purse and Betty and made her way to the garage. They kept a car there because the house was in such a secluded area, starting the car she pulled out of the garage making her way back to New York to see Don to tell him about what had happened, but suddenly stopped when she saw there was a car, parked on an angle blocking her exit.
What she saw next truly left her shocked…
