By the Fire, it wasn't what I originally planned for it to be, but it sets up how they got to the point their relationship is at in By the Fire
The flickering flame of the candle cast shadows on her face making it impossible for him to read her eyes.
“You… you want to break up?”
“We have to.”
“Why?”
“Because we have to.”
“That’s not a reason.”
“Yes it is!”
“No, Taylor, it’s not!”
“Lower your voice, Chad, you’re making a scene.” She looked around the restaurant.
“I think I’m entitled to make a scene. You rejected my proposal and said you wanted to break up!”
“We’re 18, Chad! We’re too young to be engaged!”
“I love you, Taylor. Love is all we need.”
“But I don’t love you.”
-----
“Chad, wait!” Taylor raced out of the restaurant after him.
“Why?” He whipped around. “So you can break my heart again?”
“Let me explain.”
“What is there to explain, Taylor? I think you’ve made it perfectly clear that all I am to you is some meaningless high school flame.”
“That’s not true and you know it, Chad.”
“Do I, Taylor?”
“Just let me talk.”
He crossed his arms and turned his teary eyes towards her.
“I love you, but we can’t get engaged. You’re staying here and I’m going to Yale, Chad. It won’t work.”
“We can make it work.”
-----
Six months later, he heard a knock on his front door and went to answer it. He was surprised to see her standing there.
“Can I come in?”
He moved aside to let her in.
“I know we haven’t talked since we fought, but Chad, I -”
“It’s forgotten.”
“But I -”
“The fact that you’re here and we haven’t talked in months speaks volumes, Tay.”
“I do love you, Chad.”
“I know.”
“But with school and the distance, it would be too hard to be engaged.”
“I know.”
“And you’re not just my high school flame.”
“Taylor, I know.”

He led her into the living room and sat on the couch. He patted the spot next to him and she gladly filled the spot. As he covered them with a blanket, she breathed in the manly scent of his cologne. He smelt like home.
They watched the orange flames dance around in the fireplace in front of them. Casually, he wrapped his arm around her shoulder.
She smiled and brought her body closer to his, laying her head on his shoulder. This was how it was supposed to be, just the two of them. Right here, right now, together.
