“You get the papers, I’ll get champagne,” Chad said.
He waved the waiter over as Gabriella pulled out an envelope.
“Yes, what can I get you sir?” The waiter asked.
“A bottle of your finest champagne,” Chad told him. “We’re celebrating.”
“An anniversary, sir?”
“No, a divorce,” Chad smiled. “As soon as we sign those papers our 32-”
“36,” Gabriella corrected.
“- hour marriage will be over and we can marry the people we’re really in love with,” Chad stated.
The waiter smiled then went to get the champagne.
Once he returned, they signed the papers and drank the champagne.
~*~*~*~
They had gotten married during a trip to Las Vegas.
The drinking and gambling they did at the beginning of their stay left them drunk and with pockets full of cash.
Gabriella’s head throbbed from her hangover, but that didn’t stop her when she saw the gold ring on her finger. Her scream woke Chad up.
“What the hell, Gabs?” He grumbled.
“Chad, look at your hand,” she ordered.
He looked at his finger and shouted, “When did we get married??”
“I don’t know,” she sighed. “But it looks like we celebrated it.”
Their clothes were all over the floor.
~*~*~*~
“What do we do now?” Gabriella asked once they were both dressed.
“We get a divorce,” Chad stated. “Then forget this ever happened.”
“We can’t keep this from Troy and Taylor,” she stated. “This is kind of big, Chad. We got married and slept together.”
“Troy will kill me, Gabs,” Chad stated. “He trusted me to -”
“This is as much my fault as yours,” Gabriella cut him off. “We both said ‘I do’ and we were both very active in the celebrating.”
Chad sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed. “Taylor will hate me.”
Gabriella sighed.
~*~*~*~
Then they had to tell Taylor and Troy.
“You did what?!” Taylor looked at her boyfriend.
“Taylor, let me explain,” he begged.
“What is there to explain, Chad? You married and had sex with my best friend!” She exclaimed. “The week before we’re supposed to celebrate our anniversary!”
“I know,” he sighed. “But you and me, we love each other. Isn’t there a way we can work this out?”
“How do you know your and Gabriella’s quicky marriage wasn’t a sign that you two were supposed to be together?”
“Because I don’t love Gabriella,” Chad stated. “I love you, Taylor.”
~*~*~*~
“Please, Troy, take me back,” Gabriella cried.
“Tell me one thing,” Troy said.
Gabriella nodded.
“Why Chad?” He asked.
“We didn’t mean for any of this to happen, Troy, I swear,” she sighed. “We just caught up in celebrating his winnings. I love you, Troy, and he loves Taylor. He and I don’t love each other in any way other than friends.”
“I think you should go home,” he told her.
“But Troy-”
“I need some time to think things through, Gabriella,” he said. “And I can’t think with you here.”
She nodded and left with tears in her eyes.
~*~*~*~
“So what do we do, Taylor?” Troy asked after her called her.
“I don’t know,” she sighed. “I love Chad, but maybe this is all a sign that they’re supposed to be together.”
“I never took you for a believer in signs.”
“I only believe in the obvious ones and this is right on the edge of being obvious.”
“It took a lot of guts for them to tell us.”
“Should we throw them a party in celebration?” She asked sarcastically.
“If you love Chad as much as I love Gabriella, maybe we should give them a second chance, Taylor.”
~*~*~*~
Six months later.
“So much for a second chance,” Troy muttered as he and Taylor watched Gabriella and Chad share their first dance as husband and wife.
“I should have trusted my gut and the sign,” Taylor stated.
“At least we tried,” Troy shrugged. “But the heart can’t help who it loves.”
“I guess.”
“Come on,” he nudged her. “We promised we wouldn’t act like scorn lovers tonight. After all they’re our best friends, we’re supposed to be happy for them and help them celebrate their new lives together.”
“I’m not a scorn lover.”
“Come on, let’s dance.” Troy smiled.
~*~*~*~
“Look, Troy and Taylor are dancing,” Gabriella said as she and Chad danced. “Don’t you think they look cute together?”
“I think we look cuter together,” Chad grinned then leaned down to kiss her.
Gabriella grinned and rested her head on his shoulder.
It was hard to believe that 6 months ago she and Chad were celebrating their divorce.
It took them two weeks to realize that as much as they loved Troy and Taylor, they loved each other more.
Troy and Taylor had been surprisingly supportive and instead of abandoning Chad and Gabriella, they had helped plan the wedding.
