Chad stumbles out of the bathroom. He tries to assess his surroundings. Even though he’s been to the Evan’s house a million times he still tends to get lost in the place. It doesn’t help that he’s extremely drunk. He sees a light somewhere in the distance and can hear the Wildcats talking, so he walks in that general direction. He turns down a hall and runs directly into Troy and Gabriella kissing under the mistletoe.
“Sorry,” he mumbles apologetically.
“It’s cool, man.” Troy looks at the ground rather than Chad.
“Merry Christmas, Chad,” Gabi says happily.
Chad just nods.
He pushes past the couple and heads to the back of the house where the others are. He plops himself down onto the couch and lets out an exasperated sigh. Ryan is singing “The Christmas Song” on the karaoke machine, while Sharpay passes out hot chocolate. Zeke follows her offering everyone cookies to go with their drinks. The song ends and Chad feels the couch sink in beside him. He looks over to see Ryan sitting beside him.
“What’s up with you?” Ryan asks raising an eyebrow.
“Nothing,” Chad says with a shrug.
“Danforth, you’re full of it. Now spill!”
He hates it when Ryan is right, but then again Ryan is always right. He shifts uncomfortably on the couch.
“I think I may have gotten sick from the egg nog.”
“That’s probably because it’s spiked, but that is not what is bothering you. I know for a fact you can handle your liquor.”
Chad smiles, he has never been good at lying.
“I just ran into Gabi and Troy under the mistletoe.”
“The mistletoe?” Ryan frowns. “Wow, that was probably really awkward.”
“Troy couldn’t even look at me.”
“He misses you, babe,” Ryan says, “I’m sure he feels guilty.”
Chad shakes his head. “He’s with her now. I guess I just have to get over it.”
“It still hurts though.” Ryan says looking over at Zeke. Sharpay is sitting on his lap feeding him gingerbread in between kisses. Chad rubs comforting circles on Ryan’s back.
“Yeah,” Chad answers, “it still hurts.”
Ryan lays his head on Chad’s shoulder, then places soft kisses on Chad’s neck.
“We’ll always have each other,” Ryan offers.
Chad smiles down at his best friend. He lifts Ryan’s chin then gently presses their lips together.
“Always,” Chad replies.
“Merry Christmas,” Ryan says with a smirk.
