"Hmm hmmm mmm hmmm," Emi hummed while lying on the floor of Daiki's room, kicking her feet in the air and drawing a pretty picture with him, who was next to her.
"What song is that, Emi?" he asked.
"A MoMusu song!"
"I know who MoMusu are!"
"Ehhhh? Dai-chan listens to MoMusu? You're such a girl!" she teased, giggling.
"That's not it!" he retorted back, ears turning pink at the edges. "My oni-chan likes them, and my mom sometimes watches them too. Oni-chan thinks they're pretty."
"Does that mean Dai-chan thinks they're pretty too?" she continued teasing him.
"Nuh uh! No way!"
Emi swatted him playfully. "Just kidding!", and went back to drawing, a small smile on her face.
Daiki's hand was still on his own drawing in front of him, but had stopped moving the pencil in his hand.
Emi was prettier than all of the MoMusu girls anyways.
Weeks passed and Daiki did his best to go through his everyday school life without looking or thinking of Emi...
too much at least.
Emi had made friends with Rini and a couple of other girls. What bugged him was that she had a lot of boy admirers too and he constantly saw them around her.
But why did he care? It's not like they ever dated. Why should he be annoyed at that?
If only he could answer that question.
Daiki rubbed his eyes as he walked down his school's hallway, only half awake. After having a certain someone appear in his dreams again, he decided to wake up early for once in his life so he didn't have to continue that dream.
He listened to the own shuffling of his feet as he slid open the door to his classroom. His teaacher wasn't there yet and he went to his own seat, placing his books inside his desk.
"Morning, Daiki."
He whipped around, accidentally throwing his math book across the room in the direction of where the voice had come from.
With ninja-fast reflexes, Emi managed to dodge the book, her mouth slightly opened. "Did I surprise you? I'm sorry."
"What are you doing here so early?"
"I slept early," she gave a small smile and picked up the text book, walking over to hand it to him. "Here."
Daiki snatched the book away from her hands without saying a word.
Silence.
"Daiki, can't we try to get to know each other again? Please?" Emi whimpered in a quiet voice, her eyes almost watering with tears.
He didn't look at her and didn't reply.
"Daiki. Please. I'm sorry." She took another step closer to him. And another. And another, until she could almost feel his breath on her face. "DAIKI."
"Shut up! I'M NOT DEAF."
"Daiki-"
"Do you not get the meaning of 'shut up'?!"
"I-"
"Ehhh? Ari-chan, you're here so early?"
Daiki and Emi turned towards the doorway to see Chiaki, puffing her cheeks as a way of showing frustration. "I wanted to leave you a little something. You're always sleeping in! Why are you so early today, Ari-chan?"
"I just am," he muttered, sitting down in his seat.
"Oh. Ah, Emi-chan! You're early too!" she said, the unmistakable fake kindness in her voice detected by Emi.
"Hi, Chiaki-san."
The girlfriend giggled and said something else to her before starting to talk to Daiki, who didn't give much energetic responses.
Emi sighed and just walked to her seat, putting her head down so the happy couple couldn't see her tears.
===============
Slowly by slowly, the morning went by, although Emi felt that more like a spirit and not like an actual human being going through another day of school.
In some way, being in America had been a less of a torture, since the cause of her depression wasn't within the same campus.
"Shoot! I forgot to finish my homework!" moaned Rini, sliding into her seat next to Emi in history class.
"You can copy mine if you want."
"Really? Oh, thank you so much, Emi! You're the best!" she cried, frantically copying down the answers onto her own page.
As the teacher walked in, Emi only heard about every other word he was saying. Project, two people, 8% of grade, and no choosing partner by self.
"Thank you!" whispered Rini as she managed to pass the paper back to Emki without sensei seeing.
"Ahh, Takekura Emi and... ah, Arioka Daiki."
Emi and Daiki's head both shot up at the same time, eyes widening.
She sat up a bit in her seat to see what Daiki was doing; he was biting his lip furiously, looking like he wanted to say something to the teacher but was restraining himself.
After all the partners were decided and Rini had said, "You're so lucky to be with Arioka!" to her probably five times, sensei announced that they could use the last five minutes of class to discuss their plans for their project.
Soon the sounds of chairs screeching across the floor filled the room as students got up to go to their partners. Emi and Daiki sat in their seats.
Is Daiki coming here? Or should I go over there? What should I do??!!!
As Emi was finally about to get up to walk to Daiki, she saw him push back his chair and walk towards her, his eyes covered by his bangs.
"I'm free today," he muttered to her, staring downwards, seemingly interested in his shoes.
"Oh. Okay. So am I."
Awkward pause.
"Um," she continued, "you can come over to my house. I-If you want. Or we could go to your house. It doesn't matter."
"Fine. Your house today." Although he would never admit it, he was slightly curious to what Emi's current house looked like.
"Okay. I'll meet you by the front gate later."
"Uh huh," he said just as the bell rang. Without saying another word, he turned and started walking away.
Emi sighed and sunk back down in her seat. Saved by the bell.

"-and then I accidentally stepped on my iPod! What am I going to do now? My mom said she wouldn't buy me a new one and that I had to get the money myself! I'm going to have nothing to do when I take the subway home!" groaned Akira - one of Emi's new friends and Rini's friend since middle school - while sitting with Emi, Rini, and another new friend, Tsukasa, at lunch.
"You can borrow my iPod for now if you'd like, Akira-chan," offered Rini. "My mom takes me home so I don't need it right now."
"Really?! Oh, thank you, Rini! You're a lifesaver - the long ride home is always so boring and I'm afraid if I fall asleep, I might miss my ride. Thank you!"
"I can see that happening to you," commented Tsukasa, a small smirk on her face.
"Shut up!" Akira stuck out her tongue.
"Emi-chan? Are you okay? You've been really quiet today."
"What?" Emi finally looked up from her bento to see Rini looking at her, a concerned look on her face. "Oh. I'm fine. Just thinking of something."
"Care to share?"
"That rhymed!" giggled Rini at Akira, who rolled her eyes.
"I have a question for you guys. What do you ... know of Shimizu Chiaki-san?"
"Uh oh," sang Tsukasa quietly, trying to avoid looking at Akira, whose eyes suddenly looked like they were aflame.
"Shimizu Chiaki," growled Akira, a huge scowl on her face, "is nothing but a fake-stupid-back-stabbing-two-faced-liar-idiotic-conceited-superficial-black-hearted-slut!!!!!!"
Emi blinked; Rini cowered and shoved some food into her mouth; Tsukasa sighed and said in explanation, "They used to be best friends in grade school. The summer before junior high, her dad got a promoted to chief executor of office and they went away to a European country for the entire summer on vacation. When she came back, she wasn't the same anymore. She was now sporting the best of the best of designer outfits, boy crazy, and loved anything to do with money and celebrities. When school started, she wanted nothing to do with Akira-chan and started hanging out with two other supposedly "cooler" girls and that's how she's been ever since."
"She doesn't even like Arioka-kun," huffed Rini. "At least I don't think so. I think she only wants to be with him because he's famous."
It took Emi a while before all this brand new information sunk into her.
If that girl ever found out the deep past between her and Daiki...
she was dead.
