"Dai-chan!"

"Daiiiiiii-chaaaaaaaan!"

"Dai-chan?"

"Ne, Dai-chan!"

"Dai-chan?"

"Dai-chan!"

Arioka Daiki woke up to his bleeping alarm clock, breathing heavily, one hand over his heart. He sighed and pressed the off button. He had to forget about her already. She didn't care about him.

He bounced out of his bed, wide awake for once, and stared at his disheveled reflection in the mirror.

His eyes zeroed in one the pictures tucked into the mirror's edges.

Him with Hikaru. Him with Chii on his lap. Him with Yuto flashing peace signs. Him and his sempai, Massu, grinning almost identically at the camera. Him with the rest of JUMP. Him with his arm around Chiaki. Chiaki kissing him on the nose. Chiaki resting her chin on his head. All the same poses he used to do with -

He shook his head violently. He had vowed to forget about her, just as she had forgotten about him.

=========================

"Hey did you hear about-"
    "-the new student from-"
     "America!"
     "Yeah! She's-"
    "-a singer right?"
    "And she's-"
"-trying to make her debut here in Japan!"
    "Sugoi!"

Daiki stiffened as he walked past those giggling first year girls. An American singer . . . talk about deja vu.

"Ari-chan~"

He suddenly felt a pair of arms around his waist tightly.

Chiaki.

"Oh. Hi, Chia-chan."

"You okay?"

"Yes, why?"

"Betsuni. Just wanted to say hi and tell you that there was a new student in your class - supposedly a singer."

"Sou."

"Wonder what she's like . . ."

"Mmm."

The bell rang just then and Chiaki gave him a quick peck on the cheek before rushing to her own classroom.

As Daiki settled into his seat and sensei started talking, he became lost in his thoughts.

She had been his best friend and then she left. They had never talked again.

She had promised. Pinkie promised.

Did promises mean anything?

"Hi, my name is Emi. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu."

E-Emi? It had to be a different person right?

Daiki refused to look up, biting his lip.

"Um, I just recently moved back to Tokyo from LA. I used to live here though up until I was seven."

The coincidences were too big to be just a coincidence. Slowly Daiki looked up and locked eyes with the girl.

Simultaneously, their eyes widened in recognition.

Emi?

Impossible. Daiki stared at her, unable to look at anything or anyone else. Was that really his childhood friend, Emi?

This Emi had longer and wavier hair, but it was the exact same shade of chestnut brown that Daiki's Emi had. The person gaping back at Daiki had a very slender body and brown eyes that popped out against her light skin.

But that Emi had the same voice as an angel.

Oh dear Kami-sama.

She looked even more beautiful than the last time Daiki had seen her online, which had been ages ago.

Daiki looked away, heart beating faster and faster. Why did she have to come back now?

Part of him wanted to embrace her in a big hug, but the other part resisted. He would be no good to her, and besides, she was the one who had left.

They no longer knew each other, anyways.

===================

From her seat in the back of the classroom, Emi stared at the boy in the front, whose shoulders were stiff, and had been stiff from the minute they had looked each other in the eye.

She had never expected to be in the same class as him. He had changed, that much was obvious. Well, it had been ten years since they last saw each other.

He wasn't very tall for a seventeen year old boy, but tall enough. Gone was the flat hair, and in its place was spiky hair with bangs that sometimes covered his eyes. He was really fit - Emi was surprised. Daiki had never seemed like the person to want to exercise, but then again, she didn't know that much about the seventeen year old Arioka Daiki. She had known the seven year old Daiki. And there was a major difference.

The more she stared at him and ignored the stares of other boys from behind her, the more she wanted to talk to him. What did his voice sound like now? What did he like to do now? She had missed him so much - he had been the inspiration for many of her singles on love.

The bell rang and Emi had to use all her willpower to restrain herself from jumping out of the seat.

"You're dismissed," said sensei, and the second he said that, Daiki had bounced out of his seat and speedwalked out of the room.

"Eh?" Emi quickly got up and followed him, but he was already halfway down the hall. If it wasn't for his spiky hair, he might have blended in with the crowd of other boys.

"Dai-chan!" she called out and even from afar, she saw him stiffen even more.

"Dai-chan!"

Daiki skid to a stop when Emi suddenly appeared in front of him, gasping for breath, her face pink.

"Dai-chan."

He stared into her face, Emi's angelic voice ringing over and over in his ears. He hadn't heard his name said so beautifully in ages. He had missed her so much.

"I'm back, Dai-chan."

"I don't know who you are."

Emi took a small step back, shocked etched all over her face. Daiki's face was hard and cold, his jaw clenched tightly, but his eyes flickered nervously, which he always did when he was lying.

"Dai-chan. You're lying. I know you."

"If you need help finding your way around this school, could you ask someone else? I have a busy schedule. Sorry."

"Why are you lying? I know you remember me - we were best friends!"

"Ari-chan!"

Emi blinked as a girl with short black hair and bangs appeared, hugging Daiki's arm. "How was class?"

"Fine."

The girl suddenly became aware of Emi standing in front of them. "Ah! You're the new student in Ari-chan's class, right?"

"Um, yeah. Hi."

"Hii! Welcome to Horikoshi Gakuen! My name is Chiaki - yoroshiku, ne?"

"Emi desu. Yoroshiku."

"Ah, you've met Daiki! Ari-chan, introduce yourself to her! Unless you already have."

Daiki peered at Emi, a blank expression on his face. "Arioka Daiki desu. Nice to meet you. Have fun here at Horikoshi. Ja."

"I'll talk to some other time, Emi-chan. Nice meeting you," Chiaki winked at her and then started walking away with Daiki.

Emi was left standing alone in the middle of a hallway. What had just happened?.
