Though mash-ups are pretty brilliant when done right:

"Beat It," Communist China Remix

I am not sure how amusing the video is to people who haven't been subjected to two years of traditional Chinese dance lessons despite lacking physical grace, rhythm, and a center of balance, but that slow sweeping arm thing? I totally rock it.

Anyway I am thisclose to sending the video to my mother.

A non-snarky look at China's musical talent:

I wonder if all talent show judges, in our post Susan Boyle discovery era, must now practice that exact facial expression? The "I am touched to near-tears by this display of beauty from an unlikely source" face? I'm not knocking Liu Wei's accomplishments or doubting the sincerity of the judges' reactions, I'm just wondering if there's room for variety in their reactions, to stop it from becoming a parody of itself. Like, scribbling furiously on a notepad. Crying into a handkerchief. Calling a talent agent on the spot. Cheering obnoxiously. That sort of thing.

I will not be sending this video to my mother because she will just ask why I, with two perfectly good arms, cannot play so much as one bar of Fur Elise even after three years of very expensive lessons yet here is this young man playing Chopin with his goddamn feet. So I love my mother and everything, and she has been trying very hard, these last few years, to be supportive of my unmarried, socially unimpressive ass, but I think she is basically waiting for the chance to trade me in for Sarah Chang.

Well, maybe not Sarah Chang. Because, you know, Koreans.

My second-favorite Rumiko Takahashi series, Mermaid Saga (warning if you watch the video below: it contains some violence, and the second and third parts (not linked) are very violent, though not more so than the manga - indeed, it's difficult to be bloodier than the manga...):

So Minami Takayama voices Mana, and Koichi Yamadera voices Yuta, and I love it because they also do Nabiki and Ryoga from Ranma 1/2, respectively, and I enjoy the idea of Nabs and P-chan wandering around Japan, getting into adventure after gothic horror adventure, and generally getting themselves killed in every way possible but looking fantastic doing it.

Also, by the way, hands up everyone who describes certain fics as "lemons."
