I made a workable solution for the girls waiting on Princess Anna at MDRF last year, but it was an actor's version, not a reenactor's. I made a padded crescent wulst out of muslin a'la Heather and Saragrace, and then origami-ed a muslin cap over it to fit the wearer's head and hold it in position. I then covered the cap with nice white linen, and pleated the back, which I then wrapped a linen travelling mask around and stitched in place to hold the pleats. Not as historically accurate as I'd like, but I couldn't really expect the actresses to deal with any fiddly bits or pins, the way I would.
I'm still am working on a more period solution for myself and my cmapfollowers, and am very interested to see what you develop and uncover in your research. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to writing my stuff down to share, too.
Tschuss!
